But that did not mean every Nintendo product or service was available. Tencent’s mainland China Switch eShop stopped selling software on March 31, 2026, and downloads, code redemption, and other network services ended on May 15, 2026. Those service changes do not establish that Nintendo was generally banned in China.
Was Nintendo officially available in mainland China?
Yes. In a December 4, 2019 announcement, Nintendo said Tencent was its sales representative for the Chinese market and announced a mainland China release for December 10. The announcement gave a suggested retail price of RMB 2,099 at launch; that is a historical 2019 price, not a current price. Nintendo’s release announcement documents the arrangement.
This establishes an officially distributed Nintendo Switch in mainland China. It does not establish unrestricted availability of every Nintendo console, game, online feature, or service, nor does it establish the status of Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, or imported consoles.
What happened to the mainland China Switch services?
Tencent announced an operational adjustment to services for the China-market Nintendo Switch. Its published schedule set separate end dates for software sales and online services. Tencent’s service notice and its April 2026 user guidance set out the schedule and preparation advice.

| Date and time | Service affected | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| March 31, 2026, 22:00 China time | China-market eShop software sales ended. | New software purchases through that eShop were no longer available. |
| May 15, 2026, 22:00 China time | Downloads, code redemption, and other network-related services ended. | Owners could no longer rely on those Tencent-operated services for downloads, redemptions, and related online functions. |
| December 31, 2026 | Repair service for mainland China Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, and related accessories is scheduled to end. | This is a separate repair-support deadline, not the date the eShop or network services ended. |
The dates apply to the Tencent China-market service path. They should not be read as shutdown dates for every Nintendo Switch region or Nintendo service worldwide.
What should owners of the Tencent China-market console know?
Downloads, updates, and system preparation
Before the network cutoff, Tencent advised owners to install system version 19.0.2 and download owned software they wanted to keep using. Tencent said system updates and software redownloads or updates would not be available after network services stopped. Version 19.0.2 was Tencent’s pre-shutdown recommendation, not a statement that it is the latest system version globally.

Games and other functions
Tencent’s April 2026 guidance says the cutoff affects system functions and some games and tools, while some functions and software are unaffected. The effect depends on the specific title or function; do not assume every game stops working or that every game remains fully usable. Consult Tencent’s linked affected and unaffected lists in its notice for title-level details.
Repair support
Tencent separately announced that repair service for the mainland China Switch, Switch OLED, and related accessories will stop on December 31, 2026. That deadline is distinct from the May 15 network-services cutoff. Tencent’s repair-service reminder gives the announced date.

Does this mean Nintendo is banned in China?
No such conclusion follows from the official notices. Nintendo’s 2019 release documents an authorized mainland China launch through Tencent; Tencent’s later notices describe service adjustments and end dates. The notices do not say Nintendo was generally prohibited or attribute the shutdown to a Nintendo-specific legal ban. They also do not provide a comprehensive account of Chinese law, so they cannot answer every legal question about every Nintendo product or sales channel.

The sources establish the original official launch, but do not establish current official hardware sales, stock, or whether a particular retailer listing is authorized or compatible. A buyer should distinguish the Tencent mainland China model from another region’s hardware and check what downloads, updates, redemption, online features, and repair support the specific model depends on. The ended Tencent network services are not a guaranteed workaround opportunity for imported hardware or alternate-region accounts.
