Nottingham Forest signed him later that summer. BBC Sport reported the fee as £10m; a separate report quoted Botafogo owner John Textor referring to £16.5m, and the available accounts do not explain the difference. Jesus’s subsequent goals make the move look promising on the pitch, but they do not establish that Forest has made an accounting profit or that Ipswich missed a guaranteed bargain.
Did Ipswich Town try to sign Igor Jesus?
Yes, according to John Textor, whose account of a January 2025 approach was reported by The72. Textor said: “We only had one offer [in January], from Ipswich. But he did not want to leave.” The reported bid and refusal come from Textor’s account; the sources reviewed do not include a direct confirmation from Ipswich.
At the time, Jesus was playing for Botafogo. His decision not to leave explains why the reported approach did not become a transfer. It does not establish that Ipswich and Botafogo agreed a fee or that Jesus later chose Forest over a formal Ipswich offer.
How the transfer unfolded
| Date | What was reported | Attribution |
|---|---|---|
| January 2025 | Ipswich was the only offer Botafogo received for Jesus that month, and Jesus did not want to leave. | John Textor, as quoted by The72 and reported in comments to Brazilian press |
| Summer 2025 | Jesus joined Nottingham Forest; the fee was reported as £10m. | BBC Sport |
| 2 December 2025 | Textor referred to Forest buying Jesus for £16.5m. | Goal, reporting Textor’s remarks |
| 25 January 2026 | Jesus was described as having eight goals, including one Premier League goal. | BBC Sport |
| 30 April 2026 | Jesus was reported to have 15 goals for Forest. | BBC Sport |
Why do reports give different Forest fees?
BBC Sport reported a £10m fee for the summer 2025 transfer. In remarks reported by Goal on 2 December 2025, Textor referred to Forest buying Jesus for £16.5m and said his injury history was the main reason Botafogo did not receive more. These are different attributed figures, and the available reporting does not reconcile them. It is not established whether they reflect add-ons, fee structure or another basis, so neither figure should be presented as an undisputed total.

Textor’s comments describe his view of the negotiation; they are not, by themselves, proof of a fee adjustment or wrongdoing by either club.
Did Forest get good value from the signing?
There is evidence of sporting returns: BBC Sport reported 15 Forest goals by 30 April 2026. Its earlier report, published 25 January 2026, gave a snapshot of eight goals, including one in the Premier League. Those dated totals show how his record was reported at those points; they do not establish his total as of October 2026 or his current form.

Renato Paiva, Jesus’s former Botafogo manager, called him “a very complete player” and said he was the kind of number nine coaches seek. Paiva also argued that Botafogo made a strategic mistake by selling before the Club World Cup, saying better offers might have arrived after the competition. That is Paiva’s assessment of a possible alternative, not evidence that a higher offer would actually have been made.
Calling the move a sporting success or promising value is therefore more defensible than saying Forest has “profited.” Goals and praise do not reveal a player’s current market valuation, the full financial terms of the transfer, or Forest’s accounting position. The reports reviewed do not establish any of those figures.

Was it an Ipswich transfer regret?
It is reasonable to ask whether Ipswich missed an opportunity: the club reportedly made the January approach, and Jesus later scored for Forest. But the available account says he did not want to leave Botafogo at that point. It does not show what fee Ipswich offered, whether a deal could have been agreed, or whether Jesus would have produced the same results in a different team. “Missed bargain” is a hindsight judgment, not a settled transfer or financial conclusion.
