You can send a registry gift to the couple, give cash or a check with a card, or bring a present if the couple’s instructions and local custom allow it. Choose an amount that fits your budget—not the cost of your meal.
Do you need to bring a gift to the reception?
No. Wedding gifts are a longstanding way to show support, but giving a gift and bringing it to the venue are separate decisions. The Emily Post Institute says guests may send a gift before the wedding or soon afterward; bringing one is customary in some regions and communities. Follow the couple’s instructions and the customs relevant to their celebration.
If the couple asks guests not to bring gifts to the venue, respect that request. Otherwise, bringing a gift is an option, not a universal requirement. The Knot notes that many couples have a gift table, but arrangements vary.

Send a registry gift
Check the registry’s delivery instructions and use the stated destination. Shipping a gift directly to the couple can be more convenient than transporting a box to the reception. Registry gifts can also be brought to the event if that suits the couple’s instructions.

Bring a gift to the reception
If you bring a present, use the couple’s requested arrangements or the designated gift table if there is one. Keep in mind that venue logistics and the couple’s preferences may differ; a gift table is common, not guaranteed.
Give cash or a check
Cash or a check is acceptable. Put it in a congratulatory card, and add a personal note. Cash is traditional in some cultures, but it is not a universal preference, so consider the couple’s customs and any instructions they have shared.

Send a gift after the wedding
If you do not bring a gift, send it before the wedding or as soon as possible afterward. The Emily Post Institute’s guidance describes three months after the wedding as the outside timing. Its September 19, 2025 article says a gift may be sent ahead, brought to the wedding if the couple has not asked guests not to, or sent within three months afterward.
How much should you spend?
There is no required price. The Emily Post Institute advises choosing an amount based on your budget, your relationship with the couple, and what they might like. Do not try to match the hosts’ per-person reception or catering cost; Emily Post calls the “cover your plate” idea a myth.

The Knot reported an average wedding-gift cost of $150 in 2024. That figure came from its 2024 Guest Study, a survey of 1,000 U.S. adults ages 18–54 who attended at least one wedding in person that year. It describes respondents’ reported average, not a suggested minimum or etiquette rule. Emily Post’s 2025 examples of $25, $100, and $250 are illustrative budget amounts, not required spending levels.

- Check the invitation, wedding website, or registry for instructions about gifts and delivery.
- If the registry specifies a destination, send the gift there rather than assuming it should be carried to the reception.
- If you give cash or a check, include a congratulatory card and personal note.
- If you are not bringing a gift, send it ahead of time or promptly after the wedding.
- Choose an amount you can comfortably afford; do not calculate it from the reception’s cost per guest.
These recommendations reflect U.S.-facing etiquette guidance. Customs differ among communities, and there is no single delivery method or spending rule established for every country, culture, or religion.
