Which body butter should you choose?
For very dry skin or rough patches

For a less sticky or more polished finish
Saltair Santal Bloom is the clearest choice in this group for a velvety, non-greasy feel, though it is scented. If you want visible luminosity, ELLE positions Fenty Skin Butta Drop for hydration with glow. For a thick, plush texture, Delícia Drench is a candidate, but allow extra time to rub it in.
For sensitive or reactive skin
There is no guarantee that a product described as natural, fragrance-free, or gentle will suit every sensitive-skin reader. Allure’s dermatologist cautions that botanical extracts may irritate some reactive skin, a relevant consideration for Nonfiction Enriching Body Cream. Fragrance is another potential concern: several options here are scented, and the published descriptions do not establish that they are suitable for fragrance-sensitive skin. For body-acne-prone skin
ELLE’s dermatologist recommends using body butter selectively rather than applying it head to toe if you are prone to body acne. A richer product may be more practical on dry patches than across areas that tend to break out.

ELLE’s dermatologist guidance favors rich emollients alongside ingredients that support or soothe the skin barrier. Depending on your preferences and tolerance, useful label ingredients may include shea, cocoa, or mango butter; sunflower, jojoba, or coconut oil; glycerin; ceramides or fatty acids; and soothing ingredients such as colloidal oatmeal, aloe, or vitamin E. Ingredient lists alone do not establish how a product will feel or whether your skin will tolerate it.

Use the product’s texture and fragrance as practical filters. A thick butter can suit rough, dry patches but take longer to spread; a whipped or oil-infused formula may leave a more noticeable finish. If scent is a concern, check the current product label rather than relying on a roundup’s general description, since versions and formulas can change.

How to apply body butter
- Apply after bathing. Pat skin dry, then smooth the product over areas that feel tight or dry. ELLE’s dermatologist says body butter may be useful after showering, during colder months, or before bed.
- Use a modest amount first. Add more only where needed, especially with thick formulas that take longer to rub in.
- Target dry areas if you are breakout-prone. Apply selectively rather than automatically covering the whole body.
- Check tolerance. Try an unfamiliar formula on a small area first if your skin is reactive, and discontinue use if irritation develops.
