What counts as evidence that SpaceX is being hurt?
A controversy can create real exposure without proving that the company has suffered a realized financial loss. For SpaceX, the distinction matters because its chief executive’s public conduct, its government work and political disputes can become linked in public debate—but a threat to change a contract is not the same as a canceled contract.

These distinctions keep company-specific outcomes separate from political criticism or developments involving Musk’s other businesses. Tesla results, Musk’s personal wealth and SpaceX performance are not interchangeable measures.
What happened with SpaceX employees and the NLRB complaint?
In 2022, SpaceX employees circulated an open letter criticizing Musk’s public conduct. The letter’s authors argued that his prominence made his statements relevant to the company, writing that “every tweet that Elon sends is a de facto public statement by the company.” They also called his actions a “frequent source of distraction and embarrassment.” Those are the employees’ stated views, not an independent measurement of company morale or performance.

In January 2024, a National Labor Relations Board regional director filed a complaint alleging that SpaceX unlawfully fired employees involved in the letter and created an impression that employees were under surveillance. SpaceX disputed the allegations and said the employees were fired for violating company policies. A complaint is an allegation in a legal process, not a final ruling; the reporting cited here does not establish the case’s ultimate disposition.
The episode documents a dispute involving employee relations, but it does not quantify turnover, lost productivity or other financial effects. Those would require separate evidence.

Did the Trump-Musk feud cost SpaceX contracts or NASA missions?
Associated Press reporting in June 2025 described a sharp public dispute: Trump threatened SpaceX’s government contracts, and Musk said SpaceX would decommission its Dragon spacecraft before later saying he would not. The report treated fewer NASA missions and fewer overseas Starlink contracts as possible consequences dependent on how the dispute developed—not as losses that had already happened.
That makes the feud a plausible source of political and procurement risk for a company that serves government customers. But the cited account does not establish that NASA canceled a mission, that a contract was withdrawn, or that SpaceX lost revenue because of the exchange. A threatened consequence should not be reported as an outcome.

Do conflict-of-interest concerns prove SpaceX received improper contracts?
No. In 2025, Democratic leaders on a U.S. House committee requested information from NASA about potential conflicts involving Musk. Their press release characterized SpaceX as having received more than $15 billion in NASA funding. That figure is the lawmakers’ characterization in their release; it is not independently verified here and should not be mistaken for money lost, disputed or improperly awarded.
Reuters separately reported lawmakers’ concerns about Musk’s government role and SpaceX’s contracting. It also reported that SpaceX continued to perform and win contracts during the period it described. Scrutiny of potential conflicts is relevant governance exposure, but scrutiny by itself does not demonstrate a tainted award or a financial penalty for SpaceX.

Did Starlink take over an FAA telecommunications contract?
The available Reuters account does not support saying that Starlink took over an existing Federal Aviation Administration telecommunications contract. SpaceX said Starlink had no intent to take over that contract and described its role as working with L3Harris and the FAA to identify possible infrastructure upgrades. SpaceX’s statement establishes the company’s position, not the full procurement record; the reported role was possible infrastructure work.

To move from plausible risk to a demonstrated business effect, evidence would need to connect a specific outcome to Musk’s conduct rather than merely show that controversy and government work existed at the same time. Useful evidence would include:

They do not establish SpaceX’s financial performance through 2026, current contract status or the present disposition of the labor case. On this evidence, reputational, workforce and government-relations risks are credible; the amount of realized SpaceX harm caused by Musk’s behavior remains unestablished.
