Amazon Household, now called Amazon Family, does not have a separate fee. The cost is the U.S. Prime membership: Kiplinger reported a standard price of $139 per year or $14.99 per month on October 1, 2026. Sharing can make one Prime membership more useful to eligible adults in the same household, but whether it is worth paying for depends on the benefits they actually use and their comfort with Amazon’s account and payment-sharing rules.
What Amazon Household is called now—and what it costs
Amazon renamed Amazon Household to Amazon Family in March 2025. The older name remains common in searches, but Amazon Family is the current U.S. feature. Amazon describes it as a way to share Prime benefits and digital content; it is included with Prime rather than sold as a separate add-on. Amazon’s Amazon Family help page explains the feature and its rules.

Who can share Amazon Family benefits?
For U.S. accounts, Amazon allows a Prime member to share benefits with one other adult aged 18 or older who lives at the same primary residential address. Amazon defines that as the place a person considers home and spends most of their time. The two adults link their accounts, and the organizer shares a payment method with the invited adult for household verification. Amazon says: “When you create a new Amazon Family, the Family Organizer shares their payment method with the other adult member.”
Amazon’s help page says an Amazon Family can include up to four children and up to four teens, but teen eligibility is limited: the teen must have been added before April 7, 2025, or after January 1, 2026, where available. Teen availability and rules should not be assumed to apply in other marketplaces.

Amazon says free-trial members, Student and Young Adult Prime members, and Prime Video-only members cannot share Prime benefits through Amazon Family. Prime Video sharing also requires a U.S. billing address. Amazon’s current rules are described on its Amazon Family help page.
Which Prime benefits are shared—and which are not?
Amazon lists these benefits as shareable through Amazon Family, subject to eligibility and the applicable terms:

Amazon also says Prime members can share Amazon Music Prime with one other adult. For the current benefit list, see Amazon’s page on sharing Prime benefits.
Prime Video with ads is shareable; Prime Video Ad Free is not. Amazon requires an individual subscription for the Ad Free option, so do not count it as a benefit shared through Amazon Family.

How to decide whether it is worth paying for
Compare the Prime fee with the value your household expects to get—not with a universal number of orders or a generic estimate of streaming value. A membership is more compelling when both eligible adults regularly use benefits that are included, and less compelling when the household would rarely use them or already gets equivalent services elsewhere.
- Delivery: Estimate the shipping fees you would actually pay without Prime for eligible purchases. Do not count every order as a saving if you would qualify for free shipping another way or would not have placed the order.
- Entertainment and reading: Consider whether household members will use Prime Video with ads or Prime Reading. Put no dollar value on a service you would not otherwise choose to use.
- Other benefits: Include Amazon Photos, eligible digital content, music, and third-party benefits only if they fit your household’s needs.
- Sharing terms: Confirm that the second adult lives at the same primary address, can link accounts, and is comfortable with the organizer sharing a payment method for verification.
- Billing choice: Compare your actual available annual and monthly prices. At the reported standard U.S. rates, annual billing costs less over a full year than 12 monthly payments, but monthly billing may suit someone who does not expect to keep the membership all year.
Amazon’s overview of Prime describes a broader mix of delivery, entertainment, music and podcasts, and shopping-event benefits; the Amazon Family benefit list is the better guide to what can actually be shared. See Amazon’s Prime overview.

When Amazon Family is a poor fit
The sharing feature is not a way to split Prime with friends or relatives who live elsewhere: the same-primary-address rule is central to eligibility. It may also be unsuitable if either adult is uncomfortable with the required payment-method sharing, if the Prime account is on an ineligible membership type, or if the household mainly wants Prime Video Ad Free. In those cases, compare the membership’s other benefits against its full cost rather than assuming the shared slot resolves the issue.
