Re:

Can Cheaper Remittances Boost U.S. Export Competitiveness?

Could cheaper remittances help U.S. exporters compete? The argument is plausible, but World Bank remittance-cost figures are not business invoice fees or evidence of export growth.

Cheaper cross-border payments could reduce friction for some U.S. exporters, but the evidence does not show that lower remittance costs have increased U.S. exports. The argument attributed to Iurii Gugnin in a TechBloat interview is best understood as a hypothesis about fees, currency conversion and settlement—not as a measured export-growth result. Crucially, migrant remittances and business invoice payments are different kinds of transfers.

What the interview argues—and what it does not establish

The TechBloat interview frames payment experience as part of the buying experience: high fees, unclear exchange rates or unpredictable settlement could make a cross-border purchase harder, particularly for smaller buyers and sellers. On that reasoning, improving payment infrastructure might help some U.S. exporters compete. The page’s examples, including orders that might be abandoned because payment is cumbersome, are illustrative; the available sources do not quantify how often that happens or demonstrate that cheaper transfers cause export growth. TechBloat interview, logged May 26, 2026.

The interview page attributes statements to Gugnin, but its provenance has not been independently corroborated. Its argument can be summarized, but its wording should not be treated as an authenticated direct quotation.

What remittance-cost figures can tell exporters

The World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide (RPW) dataset tracks the cost of relatively small person-to-person transfers across country corridors. It offers useful context about cross-border payment costs, but it does not measure fees on business export invoices or the effect of payment costs on U.S. trade.

World Bank measure Figure What it describes
Global average, Q1 2024 6.35% Cost of sending remittances
Digital remittances, Q1 2024 4.96% Average cost in the RPW digital service category
Non-digital remittances, Q1 2024 6.94% Average cost in the RPW non-digital service category
Global average displayed on the RPW page, updated August 18, 2025 6.36% A dated remittance figure displayed on the page, not an exporter payment fee

The Q1 2024 figures come from World Bank Remittance Prices Worldwide, Issue 49. The later 6.36% figure is the headline value displayed on the World Bank RPW page; it is time-specific, and the dataset is updated over time. The digital and non-digital averages are categories in the remittance dataset, not a controlled estimate of what digital payment rails do to business-payment costs.

In June 2024, the World Bank estimated that officially recorded remittances to low- and middle-income countries reached $656 billion in 2023. It also reported a 6.4% average cost for sending $200 in Q4 2023. Those figures show the scale and cost of migrant remittances, not the cost of U.S. export transactions. World Bank, June 26, 2024.

How payment friction could matter to a U.S. exporter

For an exporter, the relevant question is not simply whether remittances are expensive. It is what the buyer and seller actually pay and experience when settling a commercial invoice. Depending on the transaction, friction can include the exchange-rate spread, sending and receiving charges, intermediary-bank fees, settlement delays and the work needed to match a payment to an invoice.

If those costs or delays make a purchase less attractive, improving the payment process could help. That is a plausible commercial mechanism, not proof that cheaper remittances raise U.S. exports. RPW data cannot establish the size of any effect on a particular business, corridor or invoice.

What to compare in a business cross-border payment

There is no provider ranking established by the sources cited here. An exporter evaluating payment options can compare the transaction on its own terms:

  • All-in cost: Include the stated transfer fee, the exchange-rate spread, and any receiving or intermediary charges—not just the advertised fee.
  • Delivery and settlement: Check the expected time for funds to arrive and become usable, and whether that timing varies by payment method or corridor.
  • Availability and transparency: Confirm that the service supports the buyer’s country, currency and payment method, and shows the exchange rate and charges clearly before payment.
  • Compliance handling: Understand what customer and transaction checks apply, how sanctions screening is handled, and what information may be required.
  • Exceptions and records: Check the process for failed or returned transfers, disputes and refunds, and whether payment details support reliable invoice reconciliation.

These are practical comparison criteria, not findings from a test of named providers. RPW’s remittance comparisons vary by service and transfer conditions and are not a comprehensive comparison of exporter payment services.

Could stablecoins reduce cross-border payment costs?

Stablecoins are one possible development in payment infrastructure, not a guaranteed cost saving for exporters. The IMF says they may reduce the cost of cross-border payments and remittances and increase speed; that qualified assessment does not establish a particular business’s fees, settlement time or export outcome. IMF, “Tokenized Finance and Money,” May 11, 2026.

A business considering a new rail still needs to assess the complete transaction: conversion into and out of the payment asset, service and network charges, access in the relevant countries, compliance obligations, settlement and reconciliation. A different rail does not by itself show that the buyer or exporter will pay less overall.
