15 inexpensive wedding venue ideas to investigate
Availability, prices and rules depend on the specific venue. Ask for a written, itemized quote before you book, and check whether the site works for both your ceremony and reception.
1. City or county park pavilion
Ask what the reservation includes: shelter, tables, chairs and restrooms can make a basic rental more practical. Confirm rain plans, amplified-sound and alcohol rules, cleanup expectations, and whether the pavilion is shared with other park visitors.
2. State park
Look for group facilities, cabins or other nearby lodging, and any limits on catering. Find out whether the ceremony permit and reception reservation are separate, and whether guest admission or parking is an added cost.

3. National park overlook or designated ceremony site
A scenic outdoor site may have a modest permit fee, but it may not include seating, privacy, decorations or reception access. Capacity and rules vary by park and even by site. For example, Arches National Park lists designated locations with group limits from 15 to 80; its one-hour permit does not reserve the space exclusively, and the park generally does not authorize decorations, catering, tents, tables or other furniture. Folding chairs are considered case by case, and groups larger than 25 need a parking plan. Check Arches’ current wedding guidance before budgeting.
4. Community center
Compare the room fee with what is included: chairs, tables, kitchen access, setup help and cleaning can change the total. Ask about staffing, event hours, insurance, and whether you can bring your own food and vendors.
5. Cultural or ethnic community hall
Contact local organizations about rental access and any member rates, but do not assume either is available. Confirm kitchen use, alcohol rules, setup and cleanup responsibilities, and whether outside caterers are permitted.

10. Historic building or heritage site

15. Campground, lodge or park clubhouse
Compare a reservable indoor room with a bare outdoor site: an indoor facility may already provide seating, tables and a weather backup. Great Smoky Mountains National Park describes its Appalachian Clubhouse as a 3,000-square-foot facility with seating for 100 and tables and chairs; a separate facility reservation is required. Review the park’s wedding and facility guidance for current requirements.

Ask each venue to price the same guest count, hours and event scope. An itemized quote makes it easier to see whether a low rental or permit fee is offset by required services or equipment.
- Site rental or permit, including separate ceremony and reception reservations
- Tables, chairs, linens, tenting and weather backup
- Catering, beverage minimums and any restrictions on outside food or vendors
- Staffing, monitoring, setup, teardown and cleaning
- Insurance, parking, guest admission, sound and electricity
- Any separate reception location and the travel between sites
Published fees illustrate why the details matter, but they are venue-specific figures—not a national price comparison. Arches National Park lists a $185 wedding permit application fee and says it may also charge a separate cost-recovery fee based on staff time and travel. Yosemite National Park lists a $150 permit fee, plus $50 per hour if event monitoring is required. Bryce Canyon National Park lists a $100 permit fee, with park admission separate for guests; its guidance waives entrance fees only for the couple and officiant. Yosemite’s wedding-permit page and Bryce Canyon’s wedding guidance provide the park-specific details. Check the current pages and confirm fees directly before using any amount in your budget.
Check capacity, access and permit rules before choosing a date
Public land can offer a memorable backdrop without offering a private event space. The National Park Service says of National Mall and Memorial Parks, “parkland must be accessible to the general public at all times.” Its designated sites have different capacity and equipment allowances; receptions are not permitted at ceremony locations, though separate areas may be available under a special event permit. The guidance allows battery-operated candles, but that does not mean decorations are allowed at every park. Check National Mall and Memorial Parks’ current wedding guidance for the site you are considering.
Rules can also differ within one park. Great Smoky Mountains National Park generally limits outdoor wedding locations to 25 people, one hour and six vehicles; historic churches have different limits unless otherwise noted. Permits do not generally grant exclusive use. Yosemite’s cited guidance says applications may be scheduled up to one year in advance and more than 21 days before an event, while Bryce Canyon says requests take two to four weeks to process and advises applying in advance. Confirm current timing and requirements with the relevant park before making plans. Great Smoky Mountains’ wedding guidance, Yosemite’s permit page and Bryce Canyon’s guidance apply to their own locations.
For couples considering Australia, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service describes wedding settings across more than 40 locations, including historic buildings, lookouts, beaches and rainforest. Its guidance says applications should be submitted at least 15 days ahead and may be made up to 12 months in advance. Those timelines apply to NSW, not U.S. parks. Check NSW National Parks’ wedding information for local rules.
