India and Canada formally launched negotiations on a proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) on March 2, 2026. By October 2, Canada said four rounds had been completed and scheduled a fifth for October 5–9. That is progress in talks—not a signed free trade agreement. The available official updates do not establish what happened in the fifth round.
What did India and Canada agree to?
The headline’s reference to resuming “free trade agreement talks” describes renewed engagement. The formal process is negotiation of a proposed CEPA. On March 2, 2026, the two governments signed and exchanged terms of reference and launched negotiations. India said those terms set the format, frequency and approach for the discussions. The leaders described the talks as a shared effort to pursue an ambitious, mutually beneficial agreement. Their statement set an objective of concluding negotiations by the end of 2026; it did not announce a completed deal.
Where do the negotiations stand?
Canada’s September 21 update said four negotiating rounds had been completed. On October 2, Global Affairs Canada said International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu and India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal discussed progress ahead of the fifth round, then scheduled for October 5–9. The same Canadian readout listed a trade mission to India for October 12–17; those dates were also a schedule, not confirmation that the events had concluded. Both governments have stated an end-of-2026 goal for concluding the negotiations. A target date is not a guarantee: the sources available here do not establish a fifth-round outcome, final tariff schedules, agreement text or a complete list of unresolved issues.
What could the CEPA cover?
India describes the negotiations as covering trade in goods, services and other policy areas that both sides agree to include. The public updates cited here do not disclose detailed tariff offers or exclusions, so they do not show which products or services might ultimately receive preferential treatment. The March leaders’ statement also identifies energy, critical minerals and clean energy among wider cooperation priorities. These references indicate areas of bilateral interest; they do not establish specific CEPA concessions or negotiated terms. India–Canada Joint Leaders’ Statement.
What are the trade figures and targets?
Official statements cite different measures and currencies. They should not be treated as interchangeable estimates of one precisely defined target.

The Canadian and Indian materials do not explain why the stated targets differ in currency and amount, or define every target on identical terms. “Agreed to resume talks” means the governments renewed engagement and began a formal negotiating process; it does not mean they have agreed on the terms of a trade deal. The distinction matters for households and businesses assessing possible future changes: without an agreement and its final terms, the public material cited here cannot show whether or when tariffs, service rules or other trade conditions will change.
The joint statement captured the shared commitment as: “The Leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening bilateral economic engagement through the resumption of discussions toward an ambitious and mutually beneficial Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).” India–Canada Joint Leaders’ Statement, March 2, 2026.
