Rapido began testing cab rides in Hyderabad in 2023, expanding beyond its better-known bike taxi and auto-rickshaw services. By June 2026, the company said it had onboarded 500,000 cab drivers and operated in more than 400 cities. Those figures are company-reported, and the 2023 city expansion list was a plan—not confirmation of current service in each place.
When did Rapido start offering cab rides?
Rapido’s cab entry was first reported as a Hyderabad pilot in October 2023. At the time, the company said it intended to expand to Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru and Chandigarh. That announcement records the plan then; it does not establish that cabs are currently available in all those cities. TechCrunch reported the pilot and planned expansion on October 26, 2023.
How large is Rapido’s cab operation?
In June 2026, co-founder Aravind Sanka said Rapido had onboarded 500,000 four-wheel cab drivers, accounted for 35–40% of rides in India, and operated in more than 400 cities, with a goal of reaching 500. These are company-reported figures from press coverage, not independently verified measurements. “Onboarded” does not necessarily mean active drivers, and the reported ride share does not come with an independent measurement method. Business Standard reported Sanka’s claims on June 8, 2026.
One state-specific operational detail is documented: in August 2026, The Economic Times reported Rapido had a five-year cab licence in Karnataka, valid through August 2031, and operated in 21 cities in that state. This Karnataka licence does not establish permissions in other states. The Economic Times reported the licence on August 13, 2026. For a particular trip, check the Rapido app for local service availability; the sources cited here do not verify city-by-city availability beyond the dated claims above.

How does Rapido charge cab drivers?
Reports describe a driver-fee model based on a flat daily fee or subscription rather than a commission on every ride. Sanka said the change helped Rapido grow its driver base. The available reporting does not independently establish how the model affects individual drivers’ earnings, customer fares or Rapido’s profitability. Business Standard and The New Indian Express covered the company’s driver-first and affordability positioning.
Does Rapido own the cars?
Rapido’s captain terms describe the company as a technology platform that connects customers with third-party operators and drivers. They do not describe Rapido as owning the cars used for rides. What did the consumer regulator find?
On September 15, 2026, India’s Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) imposed a ₹10 lakh penalty on Roppen Transportation Services, Rapido’s operator, over booking prompts and the “Set your price” interface. The authority characterized the practices as “Confirm Shaming” and “Interface Interference” and directed Rapido to discontinue them. This is the regulator’s finding and order as reported by the Press Information Bureau; the cited release does not establish subsequent compliance or describe independently observed user experiences. The Press Information Bureau published the action on September 15, 2026.
The CCPA also stated: “A tip is ordinarily a voluntary payment made after a service has been rendered and should not be presented as a condition for the service to be provided.” That distinction matters to customers assessing prompts during booking: a voluntary tip is different from a payment presented as necessary to receive a ride.
