Indian startups raised $10.5 billion across 1,518 funding rounds in calendar 2025, according to Tracxn data reported by TechCrunch on December 27, 2025. The headline figure is often rounded to nearly $11 billion. Compared with 2024, funding fell just over 17%, while the number of rounds dropped nearly 39%—a sharper decline in deal activity than in dollars invested.
What the 2025 funding figures show
The contrast between capital and round count suggests that funding was distributed across fewer deals: investors committed less money overall, but the contraction in the number of rounds was steeper. That pattern is consistent with a more selective market, though the totals alone do not establish why any individual investor chose to fund or pass on a company.
TechCrunch attributed the calendar-year figures to Tracxn. They describe January through December 2025, not the Indian fiscal year.
How funding changed by startup stage
The pullback was uneven across the funding pipeline. Tracxn data reported by TechCrunch showed different outcomes for seed, early-stage and late-stage startups:

#1 Best Overall
| Stage | 2025 funding | Change from 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Seed | $1.1 billion | Down 30% |
| Early stage | $3.9 billion | Up 7% |
| Late stage | $5.5 billion | Down 26% |
Early-stage funding was the exception to the overall decline. Tracxn co-founder Neha Singh said, “The capital deployment focus has increased towards early-stage startups.” The figures support the distinction between stages, but do not show that every early-stage company had an easier time raising money.
AI funding grew modestly, amid a much larger U.S. market
Indian AI startups raised just over $643 million across 100 deals in calendar 2025, a 4.1% increase year over year, according to Tracxn data reported by TechCrunch. Early-stage AI startups raised $273.3 million and late-stage AI startups raised $260 million.
For comparison, the same report put U.S. AI startup funding above $121 billion across 765 rounds. These markets are not directly comparable: TechCrunch noted differences in market size, startup density, labor costs and consumer behavior. The totals show a substantial gap in funding volume, not a like-for-like measure of opportunity or company quality.
Accel partner Prayank Swaroop said India did not yet have an AI-first company generating $40 million to $50 million in revenue—or $100 million—within a year, while that was happening globally. This is his assessment, not a measured finding about every Indian AI company.

What investors said about other opportunities
TechCrunch also reported investor interest in manufacturing and deep tech as longer-term opportunities, alongside consumer-facing on-demand services such as quick commerce and household services. Lightspeed partner Rahul Taneja described rising consumer demand for faster on-demand services and said AI startups accounted for roughly 30% to 40% of Indian deals in 2025. Those are attributed investor perspectives, not independently verified market-wide counts or assurances of future returns.

A separate Tracxn report for FY 2025-26 covers April 1, 2025 through March 31, 2026—not calendar 2025. It records $11.7 billion across 1,632 rounds, compared with $14.3 billion and 2,488 rounds in FY 2024-25. On that fiscal-year comparison, funding fell 18% and round count fell 34%.
Rank #4
Tracxn says its fiscal-year funding figures include equity and exclude debt, grants, post-IPO and ICO funding. It also counted 459 first-time funded companies in FY 2025-26, down from 678 in FY 2024-25, a decline of about 32%. Tracxn interprets the pattern as capital concentrating on companies with stronger fundamentals, revenue visibility and capital efficiency; that is the firm’s analysis of the data, not proof of every investor’s motive.
The fiscal-year and calendar-year totals use different time windows, so the $11.7 billion figure does not replace the $10.5 billion calendar-2025 figure. For a continuing view of startup markets, sectors and funding, Tracxn describes its coverage at Tracxn.
