Here’s a playful resignation-letter-style joke that is clearly about a made-up role—not your actual job. Don’t send a realistic resignation notice as an April Fools’ prank: a manager may take it seriously before they see the joke.
A clearly fictional April Fools’ resignation letter
Use this only if you know the recipient would welcome a small workplace joke. Keep the reveal in the same message, and don’t use company letterhead, a formal HR channel, or a real last day.
Subject: Resignation from my position as office snack monitor
Dear [Name],
After careful consideration, I am resigning from my entirely unofficial role as the person who notices when the biscuits are gone. My final day in this position is today, effective immediately, unless someone brings in the chocolate biscuits I like.

Why a realistic fake resignation can backfire
A written resignation can be mistaken for real notice and acted on before the recipient understands the joke. In a 2014 account, The Noble Law describes a manager calling to ask about an employee’s resignation prank and warns it could have been accepted or processed: The Noble Law’s account of an April Fools’ resignation. It is an anecdote and legal commentary, not proof that every prank ends employment or affects benefits.
There is also the relationship risk: your boss may not find a serious employment joke funny. Debrett’s etiquette guidance puts it simply: “Don’t make jokes about serious matters.” It also advises owning up promptly and avoiding pranks likely to cause distress, resentment, or humiliation: Debrett’s April Fools’ Day etiquette guidance.

If you already sent a realistic fake resignation
Contact your manager promptly and say plainly that you are not resigning and that the message was meant as a joke. Don’t rely on the recipient to infer your intent or wait for them to ask. A Stack Exchange workplace Q&A suggests calling the boss promptly in a similar situation; that is community advice, not legal authority: the workplace Q&A about an April Fools’ “I quit” joke.
If your employer says it treated the message as an actual resignation, the outcome may depend on your location, contract, and workplace process. The sources here do not establish what would happen in your case. Check with your local employment authority or a qualified adviser.

If you really intend to resign
Make the message straightforward rather than disguising it as a prank. Check your contract and your employer’s resignation process first. ACAS advises checking the contract or asking a manager or HR about the process; it also notes that a written record can help avoid disputes about matters such as notice periods. Unless your employer directs you otherwise, a manager or HR is a typical recipient: ACAS guidance on resigning.
Requirements vary by location. In Australia, the Fair Work Ombudsman says notice may be required and that written notice stating your last day is best practice: Fair Work Ombudsman guidance on resignation and notice. That is Australia-specific guidance, not a rule for every country.
