That figure was an allegation reported from the bank complaint and the CBI account—not a court-established loss. Contemporaneous reports separately put the account balance at Rs 737.88 crore as of December 31, 2017.
What was the Rs 621-crore UCO Bank case?
NDTV, citing PTI, and India Today reported on April 14, 2018 that the CBI had registered a case after a complaint by UCO Bank. The allegations concerned loans to Era Engineering Infra India Ltd. (EEIL) and the suspected diversion of funds from their sanctioned purposes. The reports describe the allegations at the time the case was registered; they do not establish that any named person was guilty.
The reported Rs 621 crore and Rs 737.88 crore figures refer to different things. The first was the approximate amount at the center of the alleged fraud. The second was the account balance the bank complaint reportedly gave as of December 31, 2017. NDTV/PTI also reported that UCO Bank had classified the account as a non-performing asset (NPA) on July 7, 2013. Those figures should not be treated as interchangeable.
Which loans and repayments did the complaint describe?
As recounted by NDTV/PTI, the bank complaint concerned two facilities to EEIL in 2010. The March facility was reportedly intended to refinance higher-cost debt; the October facility followed later that year.

What did investigators allegedly identify?
The CBI reportedly alleged that loan funds were diverted from the purposes for which they had been sanctioned. The reports also described allegations involving false or ambiguous end-use certificates and fabricated business data. These are reported investigative allegations, not established facts about the conduct of any individual or company.

Who was named in the reports?
NDTV/PTI named former UCO Bank CMD Arun Kaul, EEIL and its CMD Hem Singh Bharana, chartered accountants Pankaj Jain and Vandna Sharda, and Pawan Bansal of Altius Finserve Pvt. Ltd. India Today also reported that unnamed public servants were included. Being named in a report about a registered case is not proof of guilt.
What investigative steps were reported?
India Today reported searches at eight locations in Delhi and two in Mumbai, with documents seized. NDTV/PTI also reported searches at 10 locations. The reports describe the searches in April 2018; they do not, by themselves, show what evidence was ultimately accepted by a court.
What is known about the case’s outcome?
The available contemporaneous reports establish that the CBI registered the case and describe the allegations and searches reported in April 2018. They do not establish the investigation’s later procedural status or a final court outcome. Without later agency records or court orders, it would be inaccurate to say whether the case remains active, was closed, or ended in a conviction or acquittal.
