IndiGo’s six-aircraft Boeing 787-9 arrangement with Norse Atlantic is no longer a prospective deal: all six aircraft entered service, and the airlines announced on 31 July 2026 that their cooperation would end in autumn. As of 8 October 2026, IndiGo’s stated plan is to conclude its damp lease on 31 October; Norse has described the ACMI cooperation as ending on 1 November. The announcements also set out changes to IndiGo’s London and Amsterdam services and Norse’s plans to redeploy aircraft.

How the six-aircraft agreement developed

IndiGo described its agreements as damp leases, while Norse Atlantic called the operation an ACMI agreement or charter cooperation. The companies used different labels for the same cooperation; their public announcements do not set out a complete division of operational responsibilities.

Date What the airlines announced
6 February 2025 IndiGo announced an agreement for one Boeing 787-9. It expected the aircraft to begin operating in March 2025. The stated initial term was six months, extendable up to 18 months subject to regulatory approvals. IndiGo, 6 February 2025
26 February 2025 IndiGo announced agreements for three more 787-9s, bringing the total announced aircraft to four. IndiGo, 26 February 2025
8 May 2025 IndiGo announced agreements for the fifth and sixth aircraft. It said the pair was expected to enter service by early 2026; the stated initial six-month term could be extended up to 18 months, subject to regulatory approvals. IndiGo, 8 May 2025
29 January 2026 Norse said it delivered the sixth and final aircraft on this date. In its 9 February statement, it said the aircraft was already in commercial operation. Norse Atlantic, 9 February 2026
2 June 2026 Norse said IndiGo had notified it that one aircraft would be returned on 31 August, following IndiGo’s decision to close a UK route. Norse said the other leased aircraft were continuing to operate as planned at that time. Norse Atlantic, 2 June 2026
31 July 2026 The airlines announced they would end the remaining cooperation. IndiGo said it would conclude the damp lease on 31 October; Norse said the ACMI cooperation would end on 1 November. IndiGo, 31 July 2026 Norse Atlantic, 31 July 2026

Why the airlines say they are ending the arrangement

Norse said the parties mutually agreed to discontinue the arrangement because of geopolitical challenges affecting airlines and long-haul operations between India and Europe. Its CEO, Eivind Roald, cited elevated fuel prices, airspace disruptions and longer routes resulting from the Middle East conflict. IndiGo described the operating environment as challenging because of ongoing geopolitical tensions. Those are the companies’ explanations; their announcements do not quantify the cost or route impact.

Roald said: “We have therefore jointly concluded that alternative deployment of the aircraft will be more commercially beneficial to both parties.” IndiGo’s Abhijit Dasgupta, SVP Planning & Revenue Management, thanked Norse for its partnership and professional services in the July announcement.

What changes IndiGo announced for passengers

As of 8 October 2026, these are announced future plans rather than confirmed completed changes:

  • Mumbai–Amsterdam: IndiGo said flights would switch to its Airbus A321XLR from 25 October 2026.
  • London Heathrow: IndiGo said service would be temporarily discontinued until its Airbus A350-900 aircraft are delivered.
  • Manchester: IndiGo had said it would stop flights from 31 August 2026, citing longer flying times due to airspace constraints and escalating costs. Norse linked the planned return of one aircraft on that date to the route closure; the June statement does not verify that the return subsequently occurred.

IndiGo’s July announcement says its own wide-body operations would be discontinued from 25 October and ties Heathrow service resumption to delivery of its A350-900s. The company’s February 2025 guidance had expected deliveries of ordered A350-900s to start from 2027; that is a company forecast, not a guaranteed delivery date.

What the agreement’s public terms reveal—and do not

Norse reported that the agreement guaranteed 350 block hours per aircraft per month, with additional compensation if utilization exceeded that level. This is a company-reported commercial term, not an independent industry benchmark. IndiGo’s announcements describe the agreement as a damp lease; Norse’s call it ACMI or charter cooperation. The releases do not provide a full operational responsibility matrix, so they do not establish exactly which party supplied each crew or maintenance function.

What happens to the aircraft after IndiGo

Norse said the aircraft’s return would give it more flexibility. In July, it reported discussions with other airlines about ACMI opportunities for up to five aircraft, as well as plans to use some aircraft in its own network, including more Europe–Orlando and Europe–New York flying during the winter season. Those were discussions and plans, not confirmed placements or completed redeployments.
