Levi Strauss & Co. grew from a San Francisco dry-goods business founded in 1853 into a global apparel company built around riveted work pants and the Levi’s brand. How did Levi’s become so successful?
The company’s story combines a practical product innovation with a brand that reached beyond its original workwear market. Levi Strauss opened a wholesale dry-goods business in San Francisco during the California Gold Rush era. In 1873, he and tailor Jacob Davis received a U.S. patent for waist overalls reinforced with metal rivets at points of strain. Levi Strauss & Co. identifies those riveted overalls as the foundation of what is now called blue jeans. The company’s history and FY2025 annual report document these milestones.

Levi Strauss & Co. says its jeans reached a wider market after World War II and had become a symbol of American culture and youth by the 1960s. That is the company’s account of its cultural reach; the key business shift is that a product developed as workwear became part of a much broader apparel market.
Who invented Levi’s jeans?
Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis jointly developed the patented riveted waist overalls in 1873. Davis, a tailor, brought the idea of reinforcing stress points with metal rivets; Strauss was the San Francisco dry-goods merchant who partnered with him. The company’s historical account supports describing them as collaborators in the patented riveted garment—not crediting Strauss alone with the invention.

This milestone concerns Levi Strauss & Co.’s riveted workwear. It does not establish that the company invented denim fabric or every earlier form of denim clothing.
When did Levi’s 501 jeans start?
Levi Strauss & Co. dates the creation of its first product line designated by the lot number “501” to 1890. The company introduced its first jeans for women in 1934, according to its FY2025 annual report. These dates mark developments in the company’s product line; the 501 designation came after the 1873 patent for riveted overalls.

How Levi Strauss & Co. makes money today
Jeans remain central to the company’s identity, but Levi Strauss & Co. now designs and markets a wider range of apparel and accessories. Its portfolio includes tops, footwear, accessories and non-jeans pants, as well as jeans. The company says it sells products for men, women and children under Levi’s, Levi Strauss Signature and Beyond Yoga.
It reaches customers through several routes, including company-operated stores and e-commerce, wholesale customers, department and chain retailers, and online retail partners. This mix means the modern business is larger than a single jeans line or direct-to-consumer storefront.

How much revenue does Levi Strauss & Co. make?
Levi Strauss & Co. reported $6.3 billion in net revenues for FY2025, according to its company profile and annual report. Revenue measures sales earned during the fiscal year; it is not the company’s profit, market capitalization or estimated value. The annual report also says the company employed approximately 19,000 people as of November 30, 2025.
The scale of the business reflects a long expansion from a San Francisco dry-goods operation into a multi-brand apparel company. The company’s reported revenue figure is a fiscal-year result, not a measure of what the company is worth.
