He began the one-year chair term on 3 June 2024; Luis Gallego succeeded him in June 2025. Elbers later stepped down as IndiGo CEO, effective 10 March 2026.
What the chair-elect announcement meant
IndiGo’s 11 June 2023 announcement said Elbers would become chair of IATA’s Board of Governors in June 2024, succeeding Yvonne Manzi Makolo. The announcement marked his selection for a future term; it was not the date he assumed the chair.
Elbers said at the time: “It is an immense honor to be appointed as the chair-elect of the IATA Board of Governors. I look forward to continue working closely with global industry leaders, regulators, and stakeholders to address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.” (IndiGo, 11 June 2023)
When Elbers served as IATA chair
Elbers assumed the role at the close of IATA’s 80th Annual General Meeting in Dubai on 3 June 2024. IATA described his term as one year and identified him as the association’s 82nd chair. (IATA, 3 June 2024)

He had served on the IATA Board from 2016 to 2022 as KLM’s president and CEO. After becoming IndiGo CEO, he returned to the Board in 2022. IATA represents over 370 airlines accounting for some 85% of global air traffic, according to its 2024 announcement.
Who succeeded Elbers
Luis Gallego, CEO of International Airlines Group (IAG), assumed the IATA chair role on 2 June 2025, following the association’s 81st AGM in New Delhi. IATA said Elbers would continue serving on the Board at that point. (IATA, 2 June 2025)

Elbers’s IndiGo role changed in 2026
IndiGo announced on 10 March 2026 that Elbers would step down as CEO with immediate effect and that managing director Rahul Bhatia would assume interim management. Accordingly, the 2023 chair-elect announcement should be understood as a historical appointment, not a current description of Elbers as IndiGo CEO. (IndiGo, 10 March 2026)
