Usually, yes—but a PayPal purchase is not guaranteed to earn your card’s bonus-category rate. PayPal says eligible credit-card purchases can earn rewards under the card issuer’s program terms. Whether a transaction earns base points, a category bonus, or a limited-time offer depends on your card’s rules, how the purchase is processed, and which payment method you use.
What rewards can a PayPal purchase earn?
There are two separate questions: whether the purchase earns the card’s ordinary rewards, and whether it qualifies for extra points or cash back in a bonus category. PayPal’s US help page says purchases made with a points-eligible credit card through PayPal can earn credit-card points “in accordance with the terms of your card issuer’s points program.” That is a qualified yes, not a promise that every transaction earns a bonus rate. Category rewards may depend on the merchant category code or payment route recorded for a transaction. Issuer rules differ: some terms warn that a third-party payment account can affect additional category points, while an archived Union Bank agreement explicitly excluded purchases processed through third-party payment accounts such as PayPal from its stated bonus rewards. How to check whether your card’s bonus applies
- Read the current terms for your exact card and offer. Search for exclusions involving third-party payment accounts, digital wallets, payment aggregators, merchant category codes, person-to-person transfers, or purchases paid partly with points. A general statement about earning card rewards does not override a specific bonus-category exclusion.
- Confirm the card is the funding source at checkout. PayPal may offer a balance, bank account, or more than one card as a payment method. Select the intended credit card and check the final payment details before completing the purchase. - Check for transaction-type exclusions. A purchase from a merchant may be treated differently from a person-to-person transfer or another transaction excluded by the offer. For example, Chase’s fourth-quarter 2025 Freedom categories included eligible purchases made using PayPal, but the announcement warned that person-to-person transactions might not qualify. - Use the posted rewards as confirmation for that transaction. Public guidance cannot tell you how an unspecified merchant purchase on an unspecified card will be coded. If a bonus is important, ask the issuer about the exact merchant and PayPal payment route before buying; the issuer’s terms and transaction coding determine the outcome.
Card rewards and PayPal Rewards are different
Your card issuer’s points or cash back are separate from PayPal Rewards. A purchase may qualify for card rewards and, if you meet the offer’s requirements, a separate PayPal Rewards offer. PayPal’s program agreement says an offer can have additional conditions, such as activating it or following a designated link, and exclusions can vary. Earning points is not the same as paying with points
PayPal’s “Pay with Rewards” option is for redeeming eligible existing card rewards at checkout; it is not automatically available for every linked card or purchase. Availability depends on participating issuers, merchants, transactions, and applicable terms.
