How much did the whip sell for?
The final reported price was US$525,000, including the buyer’s premium, according to the Associated Press’s July 18, 2025 report published by CBS News. That is the reported total paid at auction, not a hammer price before fees.
A PerthNow report gave the amount as $809,000. Its figures appear to be Australian-dollar equivalents: the same report put a nearby Rosebud sled sale at $22.6 million, while AP reported that sled’s result as US$14.75 million. The clear US-dollar figure for the whip is US$525,000.
What was sold?
Heritage Auctions described the lot as a screen-matched, hand-braided, 12-foot David Morgan bullwhip made from kangaroo leather. Harrison Ford used it in the 1989 film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, including the climactic Holy Grail trials in the temple sequence.

According to Heritage, whip expert Daniel Borton matched the prop to close-up footage using details such as its curvature, plaiting patterns, the position of a two-pass Turk’s head knot and an exposed leather strand beneath it. Heritage called its condition good production-used condition, noting both studio-applied weathering and natural wear. These authentication and condition descriptions are the auction house’s claims.
How did it come to be associated with Princess Diana?
Heritage said the whip was presented to then-Prince Charles at the film’s 1989 Royal Charity Premiere in London. Its account says it later passed along to Princess Diana and eventually came to the auction house from a confidential consignor. Heritage cited a Lucasfilm Ltd. letter addressed to St. James’s Palace as confirmation of the whip’s origin and presentation. AP also reported the ownership story; neither outlet identified the buyer, and Heritage did not name the consignor.

The auctioned object was a leather production prop with a documented connection to the film and the royal presentation described by Heritage. It is not the same thing as licensed Indiana Jones merchandise. For example, Hasbro’s F8036 Action-Crackin’ Whip is a soft role-play toy, more than three feet long, with snap-and-retract action and an intended age rating of 5 and up. Hasbro describes it as a licensed role-play item, not a screen-matched leather prop or replica of the auction lot.
