Swan Gold returned to Western Australian pubs in August 2023 after nearly two decades away. Lion’s current portfolio lists the beer as a 3.5% ABV lager available on tap only, but does not show which pubs currently have it.

What happened when Swan Gold returned?

Lion announced the comeback on 24 August 2023, describing Swan Gold as a mid-strength lager and saying customer requests prompted its return. At launch, Lion said the beer was in more than 120 WA venues, with rollout continuing at 20 additional venues per week, and reported more than 30,000 litres sold. Those are Lion’s company-reported launch figures, not independently audited market totals. Lion’s announcement includes the company’s figures and explanation.

PerthNow reported on 23 August 2023 that 126 venues were pouring Swan Gold and around 36,000 litres had been produced since April. It also reported that the revived beer was brewed at Little Creatures in Fremantle and distributed in kegs within WA. The venue and litre figures differ from Lion’s announcement; the available sources do not reconcile them, so they should be treated as separate reports rather than combined totals. PerthNow’s report provides that account.

How far was the planned expansion meant to go?

Danny Connolly, Lion’s WA Field Sales Director, told PerthNow that Lion’s goal was to have Swan Gold pouring in more than 200 venues by summer 2023. That was a target stated at the time, not a verified later result. The 2023 launch announcement separately said rollout was progressing by 20 venues per week; neither figure establishes how many venues stock the beer now.

What is Swan Gold’s current format and strength?

Lion’s 2026 brand portfolio lists Swan Gold as a lager at 3.5% ABV and marks it “tap only,” with Western Australia shown as its region. No packaged format is listed. This establishes Lion’s current portfolio description, but not current stock at any particular pub. Lion’s brand portfolio is the source for the listed strength, format and region.

What happened to the original Swan Gold?

PerthNow reported that the earlier Swan Gold production run lasted from 1978 to 2003. The 2023 return therefore followed a gap of nearly 20 years, matching Lion’s description of the beer as having disappeared from pubs for almost two decades.

How to check whether a pub is pouring it

The available sources do not identify current venue stock. Because Lion lists Swan Gold as tap-only and WA-specific, the practical check is to contact the pub directly and ask whether Swan Gold is on tap that day; a past venue count or expansion target is not a reliable current stock list.
