Forbes estimated Bristol City owner Stephen (Steve) Lansdown’s net worth at $3.2 billion as of 8 October 2026. That makes him a billionaire by Forbes’s estimate, but the available figures do not support a reliable current ranking of every EFL owner: the older comparison figures use different currencies, dates and ownership structures.
What is Steve Lansdown’s estimated net worth?
Forbes’s real-time estimate put Lansdown’s personal net worth at $3.2 billion on 8 October 2026. Forbes identifies his source of wealth as financial services and says he cofounded Hargreaves Lansdown. Forbes’s Stephen Lansdown profile is the source for that dated estimate. It is a publisher’s estimate, not an audited personal balance sheet.
Forbes also says Lansdown owns Bristol Sport, which oversees commercial operations for Bristol City FC, Bristol Rugby Club, Bristol City Women’s FC, Bristol Flyers and DZ Racing. That connection does not mean his personal net worth is money held by Bristol City or available to spend on the team.
How do the published comparisons stack up?
| Person or entity | Published estimate | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Stephen Lansdown | $3.2 billion | Forbes real-time personal net-worth estimate as of 8 October 2026. Forbes |
| Steve Lansdown | £2.16 billion | The72 estimate in a Championship owner ranking published 6 March 2023. The72 |
| Steve Lansdown | £1.72 billion | Historical estimate in a Mirror Football ranking republished by Standard Media; the date of this estimate is not established in the available page excerpt. Standard Media republishing the Mirror Football ranking |
| International Investment Consortium, headed by Chien Lee and associated with Barnsley | £6.9 billion | Historical consortium estimate in the same Mirror Football ranking republished by Standard Media; not an individual net-worth figure or a current valuation. The figures are not a like-for-like league table. Lansdown’s current Forbes estimate is in US dollars; the older rankings report sterling estimates, and no shared valuation method is established. The Barnsley figure is attributed to a consortium rather than one individual. The different Lansdown estimates—£1.72 billion in the historical ranking and £2.16 billion in The72’s 2023 ranking—also show why each amount needs its source and date.

Can Barnsley be called the EFL’s richest club today?
Not on the evidence available here. The £6.9 billion figure is a historical estimate for the International Investment Consortium associated with Barnsley, not a current, consistently measured valuation of an individual owner. It cannot be directly ranked against Forbes’s later dollar-denominated estimate for Lansdown, nor does it establish Barnsley as the EFL’s richest club today.
A dependable current ranking would need comparable estimates for all relevant owners, using consistent dates, currencies, valuation rules and treatment of shared ownership. Those conditions are not established by these published figures.
Rank #2
Why owner wealth is not Bristol City’s budget
Personal net worth is not the same as club revenue, club valuation, cash on hand or the money an owner intends to invest. A net-worth estimate alone cannot show how much Lansdown will spend on Bristol City or what transfer budget the club has.
The EFL’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test register lists Jon Lansdown in its Bristol City section. This is a governance-register entry, not a wealth assessment or a definitive breakdown of ownership. EFL Owners’ and Directors’ Test register
