The figures most often used to suggest a fortune refer to a business sale or to the owners’ combined shareholding in the club—not to either person’s personal wealth.
What is known about Grimsby Town’s owners?
The club’s financial statements for the period ending 30 June 2025 identify 1878 Partners Limited as Grimsby Town Football Club’s ultimate parent company. They say Andrew Pettit and Jason Stockwood own 80.7% of the club company’s issued ordinary share capital combined. Grimsby Town’s accounts establish a corporate ownership percentage, not the value of that stake or either owner’s net worth.
The accounts do not provide an individual allocation of that combined percentage or a current valuation of the club. Companies House records confirm the club company’s identity and filing history, but company filings are not personal wealth disclosures. Did Jason Stockwood personally make £400 million?
No: Stockwood himself said the figure was not his personal proceeds. In a public LinkedIn clarification, he wrote, “no I didn’t make £400m personally … it was what @simplybusiness was sold for in 2017.” That is his explanation of the figure, not an independently audited statement of his personal finances. A 2024 interview described the Simply Business sale as being “for half a billion dollars.” That is another rounded description of the company transaction, not a disclosure of Stockwood’s individual proceeds. Why a sale price is not a personal net-worth estimate
A business’s sale price is not the same thing as an owner’s personal wealth. To estimate what an individual gained, one would need evidence about their ownership share at the time, how the transaction was structured, proceeds distributed to them, taxes, other assets and liabilities. The cited sale figures do not supply that information. Nor can a club shareholding be converted into a personal fortune without a current company valuation and details of each owner’s stake.

Stockwood has described buying the club as, “On paper, buying the club was a terrible financial decision.” In the same 2021 first-person account, he framed the investment in terms of rebuilding civic value in the town where he and Pettit grew up. That comment describes his view of the club purchase; it does not disclose his assets. Stockwood’s account in The Guardian.
What the ownership figures do—and do not—tell you
- 80.7%: Pettit and Stockwood’s combined holding of the club company’s issued ordinary share capital, according to the accounts for the period ending 30 June 2025. It is not a personal net-worth figure.
- £400 million: the Simply Business sale price Stockwood cited in his clarification about the 2017 transaction. He said he did not personally make that amount.
- “Half a billion dollars”: a separate rounded description of the business sale used in an interview. It does not state Stockwood’s proceeds or net worth.
The BBC has identified Stockwood as a former online dating boss and reported that he and Pettit became co-owners after the May 2021 takeover. That background helps explain his career and the ownership timeline, but it does not provide a personal wealth estimate. BBC Sport’s 2023 interview.

What can be concluded about their wealth?
The public figures cited here do not support a reliable current net-worth number for either Andrew Pettit or Jason Stockwood. They establish the co-owners’ combined club shareholding and describe the sale price of a separate business; they do not establish individual proceeds, current assets or liabilities. Treat claims that assign either owner a specific fortune—especially claims that Stockwood personally made £400 million—as unsubstantiated unless they cite evidence specifically about that person’s wealth.
Club statements in 2024 and 2025 said Stockwood’s investment in the club would remain unchanged, with Pettit managing 1878 Partners Limited’s investment, and later that Stockwood’s equity would continue to be held in the club and managed by Pettit during Stockwood’s time in government.
