That is a reported family-wealth estimate—not a statement of Clowes’s cash holdings or the amount available to spend on Derby County. The same comparison puts Bristol City owner Steve Lansdown at £1.25 billion in 2026, while its £640 million estimate for Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson is from 2024, not the same year.
How wealthy is David Clowes?
Football League World attributes a £385 million estimate for David Clowes and family to the 2026 Sunday Times Rich List. The figure is an estimate of family wealth, not an audited personal balance sheet. It does not mean Clowes holds £385 million in cash, nor does it show how much he could or would invest in Derby County. Football League World’s comparison of Championship owners is a secondary source reporting the Rich List figure.
How does the estimate compare with other wealthy EFL owners?
The available examples indicate that Clowes’s reported estimate is lower than two prominent comparison figures, but they do not establish a definitive ranking of owners across the EFL. The years and wealth bases matter:

Who owns Derby County?
Derby County’s ownership is through companies rather than being held directly in Clowes’s personal name. The club’s official ownership and board page says it is owned by Clowes Developments (UK) Ltd and lists David Clowes on the board.
The club’s 2025 accounts describe a holding-company structure: Derby County (The Rams) Holdings Limited is wholly owned by Clowes Developments (UK) Limited. The accounts say the restructuring did not change ownership and explain that it was intended to address supporter concerns about the separation of club and stadium. Derby County’s accounts for the year ended 30 June 2025 set out that corporate relationship.
Do Derby’s finances show how much Clowes is worth?
No. Club accounts describe the club’s finances, not the owner’s total private wealth. Derby County (The Rams) Limited reported £31.9 million in revenue and an £11.3 million loss for the year ended 30 June 2025. Those are club-level results; they cannot be used to calculate Clowes’s net worth.
Separate notes on the 2024/25 accounts say Clowes Developments provided £16.3 million in cash funding to support the club’s day-to-day operation during that season through an interest-free loan. The figure concerns funding from the owner’s company to the club; it is not evidence of Clowes’s personal cash balance or total fortune. The Derby County Supporters’ Board notes provide that context.

What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
- Reported net worth is a list-maker’s estimate of assets and liabilities. The Clowes figure is for him and his family, as attributed to the 2026 Rich List.
- Club ownership is the legal and corporate relationship between the club and its owner. Derby is held through Clowes Developments and its wholly owned holding company.
- Club funding records money provided to the club, such as the reported loan from Clowes Developments. It does not establish the lender’s complete wealth or available cash.
These measures answer different questions. Personal or family wealth is not automatically liquid, held by the club, or committed to future spending. The cited figures also do not support a single-method ranking of the richest owners across the Championship, League One and League Two.
