When Jeff Gibb became seriously ill about two days into a cruise from Fremantle toward Singapore, his wife, Jan, and the ship’s doctor helped arrange care in Bali. PerthNow reported that Southern Cross Travel Insurance coordinated an ambulance, paid hospital bills before his discharge, and arranged the couple’s flights home. The account describes one claim—not a guarantee of what another policy or insurer will cover.

What happened to Jeff Gibb on the cruise?

In an account published by PerthNow on 20 November 2024, West Australian couple Jeff and Jan Gibb had boarded a Princess Cruises ship in Fremantle in September and were travelling toward Singapore. About two days into the trip, Jeff, then 73, became nauseous and his condition worsened. The couple consulted the ship’s doctor, and they disembarked in Bali after tests found pneumonia and a severe liver infection, according to the report. The precise sailing dates and ship name were not provided.

PerthNow reported that Jeff spent six days at BIMC Hospital in Kuta. These are details from the published account; it did not include independent medical records. Read PerthNow’s report.

How did travel insurance help in this case?

PerthNow reported that the ship’s doctor contacted Southern Cross Travel Insurance, which arranged an ambulance to the hospital. The insurer reportedly began paying hospital bills before Jeff was discharged, booked flights home for the couple, and coordinated with the doctor to confirm Jeff was safe to fly. Jeff told PerthNow, “They started to pay our hospital bills before I was discharged, which helped us have a good relationship with the hospital.”

That is the reported handling of the Gibbs’ claim. The article did not publish the policy wording, itemized bills, claim assessment, or an insurer statement independently verifying the details, so it cannot establish what another customer’s insurer would do or cover.

What were the reported premium and claim?

PerthNow said the couple paid $1,074 for their insurance and that $35,215 was covered for the claim. Those figures relate to this reported case alone; they are not typical premiums, expected claim payouts, or evidence that a similar premium would cover a similar event.

Does travel insurance cover medical emergencies on a cruise?

Not automatically in every policy. Australian Government travel advice says cruise travellers should tell their insurer about the cruise and check whether the policy covers cruising, medical treatment and relevant shore activities. It also advises checking cover for contagious illness where relevant. Smartraveller’s insurance guidance explains that policy benefits and exclusions differ, so the policy documents and written confirmation from the insurer matter.

Smartraveller’s international-cruise guidance notes that a seriously ill passenger may be taken to a hospital at the next port or evacuated at sea. It warns that a helicopter evacuation from a cruise ship could cost “in the $100,000s”; this is a general estimate, not a cost reported in the Gibb case. The guidance also states: “The Australian Government won’t pay your medical bills.” See Smartraveller’s international-cruise advice, last updated 18 August 2026.

What to check before buying cover for a cruise

Compare the actual policy wording rather than relying on the label “travel insurance.” Ask the insurer to confirm, preferably in writing, how your specific itinerary and circumstances are treated.

  • Cruise inclusion: Is cruising included, or must you add cruise cover or select a particular policy?
  • Shipboard treatment and transfers: Are medical care onboard and transport from ship to shore covered, and what limits or exclusions apply?
  • Medical evacuation: Does cover include evacuation at sea, including helicopter evacuation if medically necessary?
  • Destinations and shore activities: Are every port and planned activity covered, including activities with separate exclusions?
  • Pre-existing conditions: Disclose relevant conditions and ask whether they require assessment, are covered, or are excluded. Cover varies by policy; the Gibb report does not say that a pre-existing condition caused Jeff’s illness.
  • Limits and excesses: Check medical-expense limits, sub-limits, excesses and exclusions that could affect a claim.
  • Emergency assistance: Find out whom to contact and what approval or coordination is required before arranging treatment, transport or a return journey, when circumstances allow.

The government’s insurance guidance and cruise advice recommend checking the policy against your trip rather than assuming all policies provide the same protection.
