To open an account at the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP), choose an account type, get the matching form from NBP, prepare the identity and other documents that apply to you, and submit them through the bank’s process. Requirements differ by account and applicant. NBP’s Asaan Account is a simplified option for resident individuals; the Choice Current Account has separate eligibility and verification rules. Confirm the current checklist, charges, and branch process with NBP before applying.
How can I open an account in National Bank of Pakistan?
- Choose the account route. Consider whether you need a current account for transactions or a savings account for holding deposits, and check the specific product terms. NBP’s Asaan Account can be opened as a current or savings deposit account in Pakistani rupees. Choice is a non-remunerative current account. Neither product is automatically the right fit for every customer. See NBP’s Asaan Account details and Choice Current Account details.
- Check eligibility and limits. Asaan is for resident individuals. Choice’s product page says an individual resident or non-resident with a valid CNIC or NICOP may open it, subject to its requirements. Review restrictions before choosing, particularly if you expect to make larger or international transactions.
- Get the correct form. Use NBP’s Forms and Applications page to find the appropriate individual or business account form and any customer-information folio. Do not assume one account’s form or checklist applies to another.
- Prepare identity and customer-specific documents. The requirements vary by product and applicant. The Asaan and Choice sections below explain what their published guidance says; ask NBP which items apply to your circumstances.
- Submit your application through NBP’s process. Ask the branch or bank representative to confirm the current documents, any required verification, charges, expected timing, and conditions before you submit. NBP says charges are according to its current tariff; check the latest tariff rather than relying on an old fee list.
- Complete any digital-banking registration separately. NBP Digital registration is for customers who already have account details; it is not established as a way to open the bank account itself.
Which NBP account route should you consider?
| Account | Published eligibility and purpose | Key published terms |
|---|---|---|
| Asaan Account | Current or savings deposit in Pakistani rupees for resident individuals, single or joint (up to two account holders). | NBP lists a Rs. 100 initial deposit, no monthly minimum-balance maintenance, a Rs. 1,000,000 total monthly debit limit and a Rs. 1,000,000 total credit-balance limit. NBP says activation is within three working days after NADRA Verisys. These are Asaan-specific terms; check the live product page for changes. |
| Choice Current Account | Non-remunerative current account. The product page says an individual resident or non-resident with valid CNIC or NICOP may open one, subject to requirements. | Choice has its own verification and document requirements. The cited Choice material does not state a comparable initial deposit or account limit; confirm current terms with NBP. |
NBP’s general individual account form is marked revised 2016, and its document checklist is older reference material. Use NBP’s forms page to locate the relevant application, then confirm the current version and requirements directly with the bank.
What documents do I need to open an NBP account?
For an Asaan Account
NBP’s Asaan product information calls for an original, valid proof-of-identity document and a declared source of funds on the account-opening form. Its FAQ describes a copy of CNIC, the form, and a Rs. 100 minimum initial deposit for its simplified process, and says proof of income is not required for this Asaan route. Follow NBP’s current instructions about acceptable identity evidence and NADRA verification; do not apply these simplified requirements to other NBP accounts.
For a Choice Current Account
NBP’s Choice FAQ lists CNIC, NICOP, POC, ARC, passport and income proof as applicable, along with biometric verification and any other documents required under bank policy. This is not a promise that each document is accepted interchangeably or that every item applies to every applicant. The Choice product page specifically describes individual eligibility using a valid CNIC or NICOP. Ask NBP which documents it requires for your residency and applicant profile.

For business, minor, or other specialized applications
NBP lists separate business forms and customer-information folios on its forms page. Requirements for business customers, minors, joint applicants, non-residents, or other specialized cases should be confirmed with NBP rather than inferred from the individual Asaan or Choice guidance.
What are the Asaan Account limits and verification steps?
NBP lists a total monthly debit limit of Rs. 1,000,000 and a total credit-balance limit of Rs. 1,000,000 for Asaan. Its product page says activation occurs within three working days after NADRA Verisys. The Asaan FAQ says debit transactions remain restricted until NADRA verification is complete and describes additional product restrictions, including no outward remittances. Check NBP’s current Asaan terms before applying, since these limits and restrictions belong to this product and do not describe all NBP accounts.
Can I open an NBP account online?
NBP’s Digital page describes mobile-banking registration and access requirements, not an account-opening application. For limited non-financial access, it lists an account number or IBAN, CNIC, and registered mobile number. To upgrade to financial access, it lists a debit card, debit-card PIN, and registered email. NBP says you can visit a branch to register a mobile number or email in its records. Because registration requires existing account details, treat NBP Digital as a service to set up after opening an account, not as evidence that the account itself can be opened in the app.

NBP’s Asaan FAQ says: “No, Asaan Account is for resident individuals only, others can open regular account.” That statement is specific to Asaan. NBP’s Choice Current Account page says an individual resident or non-resident with valid CNIC or NICOP may open that account, subject to its stated identity and bank requirements. A non-resident should confirm the accepted documents and application process with NBP before visiting.
