How to Market a Game: A Practical Plan for Developers

A practical game-marketing plan: define the audience, present the game clearly, choose fitting channels, coordinate a Steam launch, and measure attention without mistaking it for sales.

To market a game, first decide who is most likely to enjoy it and what makes it distinct; then show the actual experience clearly, reach that audience through suitable channels, and measure what happens. For a Steam release, that means preparing an accurate store page, building a path from discovery to wishlisting or play, coordinating launch communications, and continuing to promote meaningful updates. No channel or tactic can guarantee sales or platform visibility.

Start with the game and its likely audience

Choose channels only after you can explain what the game is, who might want it, and why it may appeal to them. A useful set of planning questions—drawn from Steam’s Product, Position, Price, People, and Promotion framework—is a starting point, not a universal formula for every platform or studio.

  • Product: What does the player actually do, and what is the core experience?
  • Position: What distinguishes the game from others a similar player might consider?
  • Price: What value does the game offer at its planned price? Set this in relation to the game and its audience rather than using an unsupported sales or conversion target.
  • People: Which players are most likely to care about its genre, themes, mechanics, or style?
  • Promotion: What message, playable sample, event, or offer could introduce it to those players?

Keep the answers concrete. “Fans of strategic roguelikes who enjoy short runs” gives a team more to act on than “everyone who likes games.” It can guide which creators to contact, which communities to approach, what gameplay to show, and whether a festival or demo is a sensible fit.

Choose channels for audience fit, not habit

A channel is useful when the players it reaches overlap with the people likely to enjoy the game, and when the team can present the game convincingly there. Compare options by fit, effort, timing, and what you can measure; the table is a decision aid, not a performance ranking.

#1 Best Overall
Channel When it may fit What to weigh
Social posts and community updates When the team can share useful progress, features, or playable details where likely players already pay attention. Audience overlap, ongoing team time, whether posts can show real gameplay, and whether links can be tracked.
Creators, press, and streamers When the game is suited to coverage or play on camera and the chosen people reach relevant players. Outreach effort and lead time, gameplay suitability, audience fit, and the timing of coverage.
Demos, playtests, and festivals When the game is ready for people to play and the team can learn from or support the resulting attention. Readiness, preparation and support time, event timing, and whether participation reaches the intended audience.
Paid campaigns outside Steam When there is a clear audience and destination for an external campaign, and the team can evaluate its results. Spend and creative effort, audience fit, tracking setup, and the rules of both the ad channel and the game platform.

For any channel, be able to show the game as it really plays. A trailer or post that attracts attention by implying a different experience may bring visitors who are unlikely to become interested players.

Prepare a Steam page that explains the game

Publish when you can represent the experience accurately

For a Steam release, create a Coming Soon page once the game is far enough along to show screenshots and explain its core experience. It gives interested players a place to learn more and wishlist the game. Make the description, screenshots, and video consistent with what players will actually encounter.

Use accurate tags and consider language support

Apply tags that accurately describe the game’s genre, themes, and gameplay. Steam says tags help inform players and its recommendation engine. Valve also says supported languages can affect which players are more likely to be shown a game. Localize when the likely audience and the team’s capacity justify it; without those specifics, there is no single language list that fits every game.

Decide whether a demo or event is appropriate

A demo, external playtest, or Steam Next Fest can make sense once the game is ready for players. Valve describes Next Fest as an opportunity to gather early feedback and build an audience for a future Steam launch, not as a guarantee of reach. Steam’s documentation says Next Fest typically occurs in February, June, and October; check the live schedule before planning around an event.

Build discovery before release

Give each interested player a clear next step: view the store page, wishlist the game, try a demo, or follow a useful development update. Announcements and progress posts can keep people informed when there is something concrete to share, such as a feature, a playable milestone, or an upcoming event.

If seeking outside coverage, Steam documents Curator Connect and review keys as ways to provide copies to reviewers, press, influencers, and streamers. Choose recipients whose audiences plausibly match the game, and allow enough lead time for outreach and coverage before the date you want them to discuss.

Coordinate the Steam launch

Align the release date, store page, announcements, creator coverage or streams, and any discount with one communications plan. A launch discount is optional. Steam says it emails wishlisters when a game launches, and a newly released game may appear on relevant store surfaces, but customer interest affects exposure and placement is not guaranteed.

Understand what wishlists and visibility do—and do not—mean

Wishlists are useful because Steam may email customers when a game launches, exits Early Access, or is discounted by at least 20%. They are not, by themselves, a general boost to algorithmic recommendations: Valve’s current Steamworks visibility documentation says, “With a few exceptions like the Popular Upcoming tab, wishlists are not a factor in your game’s algorithmic visibility on Steam.”

In that documentation, Valve identifies customer purchases and play as strong visibility signals. Supported languages influence relevance, and accurate tags help categorize games. Valve also says store-page traffic alone and conversion rate are not visibility factors. These statements describe Steam, not discovery systems on other platforms. The documentation was reviewed on October 8, 2026.

Keep communicating after release

Post-launch marketing works best when there is something useful to tell players. That may be a substantial update, new content, an added language, a meaningful discount, or participation in a relevant event. Steam offers announcements and themed events, as well as Update Visibility Rounds for major updates. Tie each communication to what has changed or why players may want to return, rather than posting simply to maintain activity.

Measure attention without mistaking it for sales

Use measurement to learn which sources bring relevant visitors and where people encounter the Steam page. For external links, Steam’s UTM Analytics can help track campaign traffic; Steamworks’ traffic breakdown can show where visitors came from and which Steam placements produced impressions and visits.

Those measurements describe traffic and exposure; they do not establish that a campaign caused purchases. Record what each campaign was intended to do, use trackable links where possible, and interpret visits alongside outcomes that matter to the team. Do not treat a click, impression, or wishlist as proof of a sale.

Check platform rules before advertising

Steam’s rules are platform-specific. Valve states: “Steam does not contain any paid advertising, nor are advertising models supported in games distributed on Steam.” Developers may run paid campaigns outside Steam that direct people to Steam pages; Valve recommends store widgets and UTM Analytics to help measure those campaigns. Steam does not support ad-funded gameplay or rewarding players for watching or engaging with ads in games distributed there. Check the current rules for every other platform where the game is distributed before choosing an advertising model.
