Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you can still sign in and complete 2-step verification, change your number in the Coinbase app through Account & settings > Phone numbers, or on the website through Profile > Manage account > Edit beside your phone number. If you cannot receive a code at the old number, start Coinbase account recovery in a web browser instead. If you kept the same number but changed phones or SIM cards, contact your carrier to transfer that number.
Change your number while you can still sign in
Coinbase may ask you to complete 2-step verification before it accepts the new number. Follow the prompts shown on your account if a label differs from the steps below; do not assume you can bypass the existing verification challenge.
In the Coinbase app
- Open the menu and select Account & settings.
- Select Phone numbers.
- Select Text message (SMS), then Add a backup phone number.
- Complete 2-step verification when prompted.
- Enter the new number and select Continue.
On the Coinbase website
- In a browser, select your profile icon, then Manage account.
- Select Edit beside the phone number.
- Select Verify and complete 2-step verification when prompted.
- Enter the new number and select Continue.
See Coinbase’s phone-number change and recovery instructions for its current prompts.
If you cannot receive a code at your old number
Use Coinbase’s account recovery process in a web browser; this phone-number recovery flow cannot be completed in the mobile app. At sign-in, enter your email and password. When you reach the 2-step verification prompt, select Need help signing in or I don’t have access to my phone number, then follow the instructions. Coinbase may request a government-issued ID or other identity information. After verification, you can update your 2-step method to a new phone number, passkey, or authenticator app.

If you had already configured another method, try it first: Coinbase lists passkeys, security keys, and backup codes as possible alternatives. Backup codes are single-use. If an alternate method lets you sign in, go to Settings > Security > 2-Step Verification to update your number or method. If none works, use account recovery.
Coinbase’s general account recovery guidance says its ID-upload route can take up to 24 hours, and sending funds may be unavailable for 24 hours after recovery. A separate Coinbase Pro help page gives a 48–72-hour estimate for a different recovery flow, with possible temporary sending restrictions. These estimates describe different processes, so follow the timing and restrictions displayed in your own recovery flow rather than treating either as universal. See Coinbase’s account recovery guidance.

If you changed phones or SIMs but kept the same number
This is a carrier issue, not a request to change the number on your Coinbase account. Contact your mobile carrier to transfer the existing number to the new SIM or device, or to recover a number that was recently released or transferred. Once the carrier restores the same number, you can receive Coinbase’s SMS code on the new SIM. If you permanently changed numbers and cannot access the old one, use the recovery process above.

Coinbase recommends configuring more than one 2-step verification method so losing access to one does not leave you without a way to sign in. Options listed by Coinbase include passkeys, security keys, authenticator apps, push notifications, and SMS; what you can use depends on your account and what you have set up. Coinbase calls SMS its least secure option and recommends additional methods. Its setup guidance identifies two security keys as its highest-security setup. Review the available options in Coinbase’s 2-step verification setup guide.

A security key is an optional, phone-independent backup; it does not change your phone number or replace identity verification if you need account recovery. Choose a key compatible with your account and devices, then set it up through Coinbase’s official security settings. Coinbase notes of passkeys and authenticator apps: “These aren’t tied to your phone number, so you won’t lose access if you change or lose it.”
