In most cases, you cannot sell a Steam gift card through an official Steam channel. If you have an unredeemed physical card, first ask the retailer that sold it whether it can be refunded. If you have already redeemed the card, its value is in your Steam Wallet and Steam says it cannot be moved or gifted to another account.
Can you sell a Steam gift card?
Steam does not offer a supported gift-card resale or cash-out process. Its rules also rule out using Steam trades to move money or gift cards: the trading interface “does not support the transfer of money in any form.” Steam’s Recommended Trading Practices explain that limit.

Your next step depends on whether the card has been redeemed. An unredeemed physical retail card may qualify for a refund from its retailer. Once redeemed, its value is Steam Wallet balance, not a transferable card balance.
What to do with an unredeemed physical card
Take the card and, if available, its purchase receipt back to the retailer that sold it. Ask the retailer to check whether it is eligible for a refund. Steam says that retail cards activated at purchase but not yet redeemed are normally refundable at the retailer; that does not guarantee a refund for every card or in every location.

Steam’s gift-card scam guidance recommends contacting the retailer about an unused card and says the retailer can check its eligibility. Keep the card and receipt until the retailer has made that check.
What if you already redeemed the card?
There is no Steam-supported way to transfer the resulting Wallet balance to another account. Steam states: “Steam Wallet funds cannot be moved or gifted to another Steam account.” Steam’s Wallet FAQ describes the restriction.

A Steam trade does not provide a workaround. The trading interface does not transfer Wallet credits, cash, PayPal, or gift cards. Do not treat a private offer to trade items for money as an official Steam cash-out process.
Should you sell the code to a private buyer?
A buyer who receives an unused code may be able to redeem its value, but handing the code to an unknown person is risky: you may lose control of the value without receiving payment. Steam warns, “Never give out a Steam Wallet Gift Card to a person you do not know,” and says cards can only be redeemed on Steam. Its scam examples include requests for cards to pay supposed taxes, bail, debts, or winnings. Read Steam’s gift-card scam guidance before responding to any such request.

If you have not shared the code and someone is pressuring you to do so, stop communicating and ask the retailer whether the card can be refunded. Steam does not protect or endorse private code sales.

Yes. Steam says existing physical cards remain usable on Steam, subject to local laws. The change is that Steam is ending its physical retail program: retailers will not restock cards as supplies run out, and Steam expects retail stock to be gone by the end of 2026. That is Steam’s forecast, not a promise that every store has already stopped selling cards or that a particular store still has stock. Steam’s Wallet FAQ has the current program information.
