There is no single credit-score cutoff across the SBA programs discussed here: lenders still assess their own criteria, your credit history and whether the business can repay. For a smaller request, start by checking local SBA Microloan intermediaries; for a larger amount or a broader eligible use, compare participating SBA 7(a) lenders.
Can you get a small-business loan with bad credit?
Possibly. The SBA does not set one universal score threshold for the options below, and lenders make credit decisions under their own criteria. For 7(a) financing, SBA says applicants must be creditworthy and show a reasonable ability to repay. A weak credit record may make approval harder or affect an offer, but the available program information does not support a guarantee either way.
Before applying, ask each lender how it evaluates personal and business credit and how it treats specific issues such as late payments, collections or a prior default. Do not assume that collateral, a co-signer or a business plan will override the lender’s underwriting.
Which financing route should you explore?
| Route | Amount and eligible uses | Who decides | Published terms and key limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBA Microloan | Up to $50,000; SBA reports an average loan of about $13,000. Permitted uses include working capital, inventory, supplies, furniture, fixtures, machinery and equipment. Not for paying existing debt or buying real estate. | A designated nonprofit intermediary makes the credit decision and sets the terms. | SBA says rates generally range from 8% to 13%, with a maximum repayment term of seven years. Actual terms depend on the intermediary and borrower. |
| SBA 7(a) | Up to $5 million. Eligible uses include working capital, equipment, real estate and building improvements, certain business-debt refinancing and ownership changes. | A participating lender makes the loan decision; the SBA provides a guarantee to the lender, not a promise of borrower approval. | Creditworthiness and reasonable repayment ability are required. Rate, fees, term, payment schedule and collateral requirements depend on the loan and lender; ask for the specific offer in writing. |
| CDFI or local community lender | Products and eligible uses vary by lender. | The lender sets its own credit criteria and makes the decision. CDFI status does not mean that a lender ignores credit history. | Terms vary. For covered small-business loans, CDFI certification rules call for written disclosure of periodic payment, total repayment, finance charges and APR. |
SBA Microloan: a starting point for a smaller need
Microloans are made through specially designated nonprofit community-based intermediaries, not directly by the SBA. The SBA puts it plainly: “SBA-approved lenders make all credit decisions and set all terms for your microloan.” Find a local option through the SBA List of Microlenders. Confirm that your intended use is permitted and ask the intermediary about its current credit requirements before assembling an application.

SBA 7(a): for larger amounts or broader eligible uses
7(a) loans are made by participating lenders with an SBA guarantee. You apply through a lender; the SBA does not directly issue a 7(a) loan to the borrower. The guarantee does not remove lender underwriting or the program’s creditworthiness and repayment requirements. To explore lenders, use SBA 7(a) Loans and its Lender Match resource.
CDFIs and local business support
Community Development Financial Institutions may be another place to compare, but each lender’s products and requirements differ. The SBA reports more than 1,400 certified CDFIs in the United States; the count can change. Its Small Business Resource Hubs page also recommends contacting an SBA District Office or Small Business Development Center to find local resources.

How to prepare before contacting lenders
- Set the amount and purpose. Identify the amount the business needs and a specific use for the funds. Check that the intended use fits the program: Microloans cannot pay existing debt or buy real estate.
- Choose where to apply. For a request of up to $50,000, search the SBA List of Microlenders. For a 7(a) request, review SBA 7(a) Loans and contact a participating lender through Lender Match.
- Ask about underwriting before applying. Ask whether the lender reviews personal credit, business credit or both; how it considers the credit problems in your history; whether collateral or a personal guarantee is required; and which documents it wants. Requirements differ by lender and loan.
- Build a repayment case. Prepare a realistic explanation of how business cash flow will cover the proposed payments. Use projections you can support rather than assuming sales will rise or a future loan will refinance this one.
- Gather the lender’s requested documents. There is no universal 7(a) application checklist in the SBA guidance: contents vary with loan size and the lender’s processing method. Ask your lender for its current list rather than relying on a generic checklist.
- Read the complete offer before accepting. Get the payment schedule, rate, fees, total repayment, term, collateral or guarantee obligations, and default consequences in writing. Compare the full repayment burden, not just the amount offered.
How to compare offers without focusing only on the loan amount
- Fit: Does the amount cover the actual need, and does the lender allow the intended use?
- Total cost: Compare the rate, fees, periodic payment and total amount repaid. A lower payment can reflect a longer term rather than a lower overall cost.
- Repayment schedule: Check when payments begin, how often they are due and whether the schedule fits the business’s cash flow.
- Risk to you and the business: Identify collateral, personal guarantees and the consequences of missed payments or default.
- Decision and support: Confirm who makes the credit decision, what criteria apply and whether a local intermediary or business-support office can help you understand the process.
For covered small-business loan products, CDFI certification rules require written disclosures of periodic payment, total repayment, finance charges and APR. The CDFI Fund FAQ says the requirement applies to new applicants beginning January 1, 2026; certified CDFIs must attest by October 1, 2026. Read the actual disclosures and contract for the offer in front of you.

Do not accept financing simply because a lender is willing to approve it. Pause if the payment depends on optimistic projections, the total cost is unclear, or you cannot explain what happens after a missed payment. Compare another lender or seek guidance from an SBA District Office or Small Business Development Center before signing if key terms are missing or confusing.
