You can start a candle business from home, but making saleable candles is only part of the job: first choose a focused product, check whether your home and locality allow the activity, understand your business and tax obligations, and develop products with appropriate safety information. This guide is U.S.-focused; requirements vary by state and locality. Outside the United States, check the national and local authorities that govern business registration, home-based businesses, taxes, and product safety where you live.
How do I start a candle business from home?
Use this sequence to turn an idea into a small, manageable launch:
- Choose a specific buyer and a narrow candle concept.
- Estimate costs and test whether your planned price can cover them.
- Check home-use rules, zoning, and local requirements before investing.
- Choose a business and tax setup suited to your circumstances.
- Source components and make controlled prototypes.
- Check applicable candle safety and warning requirements.
- Launch with a limited range, keep records, and use actual results to guide changes.
The details that matter most—permissions, registration, taxes, and product-safety duties—depend on where you operate, what you sell, and how you make it.
1. Choose a buyer and a focused candle concept
Start with the customer and the reason they might choose your candle, not a shopping cart full of supplies. A clear concept helps you decide what to make, how to describe it, and which materials and packaging to investigate.

Define the first customer and product
- Buyer: Who is the candle for, and where might that person encounter or buy it?
- Reason to choose it: What is distinctive about the scent, presentation, intended occasion, or design?
- Initial range: Which small set of products can you make consistently without multiplying your materials and testing variables?
Keep the first range narrow enough to manage. Changing the wax, wick, fragrance, vessel, or dimensions can change how a candle performs, so an expansive catalog can add work before you know which products customers want. The IRS’s new-business guidance prompts owners to decide what they will sell, how they will market it, how to plan, and how to manage the business (IRS Publication 583).
2. Validate the plan and calculate unit economics
Before committing to inventory, make a cost sheet for one candle and for a realistic batch. A selling price is useful only when you compare it with the full cost of making, preparing, and selling the product.
Build a per-candle cost sheet
- Wax, wick, fragrance, vessel, and any accessories.
- Labels, product packaging, and shipping materials.
- Payment-processing or marketplace fees for the channel you plan to use.
- Expected waste, damaged components, and unsold or defective units.
- Your time for production, packing, customer service, and other routine work.
Separate one-time purchases, such as reusable tools, from costs that recur with each unit. For shipping, account for both the materials and the work involved; do not assume that a listed product price is the amount you keep after a sale. If you plan to sell through a marketplace or in person, investigate the relevant fees and any channel-specific obligations directly. No platform fee schedule or universal startup-cost figure is established here.
Use estimates as assumptions, not forecasts
Write down how many candles you think you can sell, at what price, and through which channel, then treat those numbers as assumptions to test. Do not confuse a hoped-for sales volume with evidence of demand. The IRS startup publication supports planning and recordkeeping, but it does not establish a reliable startup-cost, market-size, or earnings figure for a home candle business (IRS Publication 583).

Do this before buying substantial inventory or advertising a home address. A home-based business is not automatically exempt from zoning or other local requirements. The U.S. Small Business Administration says location affects taxes, zoning laws, and regulations, and notes that zoning restrictions may still apply to a home business (SBA launch guidance).

Verify the rules that apply to your address
- Ask the city or county planning or zoning office whether candle production, storage, customer visits, deliveries, or signs are allowed at your address.
- Check lease terms, homeowners association rules, and any applicable building or fire restrictions.
- Ask local business offices whether you need a local license, registration, or other approval for your activity.
- Confirm whether the scale or nature of your operation changes the answer—for example, because of storage, equipment, deliveries, or customer traffic.
The SBA puts the local nature of zoning plainly: “Zoning laws are typically controlled at the local level, so check with your department of city planning, or similar office, to find out what the zoning laws are in your area.” A general guide cannot determine whether your particular home operation is allowed.
4. Choose a business and tax setup
There is no single structure or registration checklist that fits every candle maker. The right questions depend on your location, ownership, risk tolerance, and plans. The SBA says registration depends on business structure and location, permit needs depend on activity and locality, and insurance for a home-based business may be relevant (SBA launch guidance).
Work through the setup questions
- Structure: Compare liability treatment, tax treatment, setup, recurring administration, and state registration rules. Consider getting qualified legal or tax advice if the choice is consequential or unclear.
- Name and registration: Check whether your chosen business name or assumed name must be registered where you operate.
- Tax identification and duties: Review whether an Employer Identification Number (EIN) applies to your situation, and identify federal, state, and local tax obligations. Do not assume every sole proprietor needs an EIN.
- Permits and accounts: Confirm required registrations and licenses with the relevant authorities; consider separating business finances with an appropriate bank account.
- Insurance: Ask an insurance professional what coverage is appropriate for your operation and products; a home policy may not answer every business-related question.
The IRS’s startup checklist discusses business structure, when an EIN may apply, tax duties, and recordkeeping. It also says its list is not all-inclusive, so use it as a starting point rather than a determination of every obligation (IRS: Starting a business).
Do not assume a home-office deduction applies
A home-office deduction has specific conditions. The IRS generally requires qualifying business use to be exclusive and regular. There is an exception for inventory storage when the home is the sole fixed location of the retail or wholesale business; check the detailed rules before claiming a deduction (IRS Publication 587).
5. Source materials and create controlled prototypes
A beginner candle-making kit can be a convenient way to obtain common inputs such as wax, wicks, containers, and pouring tools. Buying components separately may give you more control over specifications and quantities. Compare upfront cost, minimum order sizes, shipping, available component information, and whether you can reproduce the exact combination you tested. A kit is a supply option, not a safety certification.

Keep the prototype reproducible
Record the materials and dimensions for each version, including the wax, wick, fragrance, vessel, and any relevant process changes. Keep supplier and component information. If you change a component or the candle’s dimensions, treat it as a different configuration to assess rather than assuming results transfer automatically. CPSC identifies consensus standards covering candle fire safety, warning labels, glass containers, emissions, and accessories (CPSC candle business guidance; CPSC guidance for candles and accessories).
No universal burn-test duration or procedure for small makers is established by the sources cited here. Do not treat an informal test, a kit’s instructions, or a supplier’s general description as proof that a finished product meets every applicable safety requirement.
6. Address candle warnings and product safety
Before offering a candle for sale, identify which product-safety rules and standards apply to its materials and configuration. CPSC business guidance discusses a lead restriction applicable to metal-cored wicks, cautionary labeling when a candle contains a hazardous substance under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act, and general certificate requirements for products subject to a CPSC-enforced regulation, standard, or ban (CPSC candle business guidance).
Check the relevant requirements for your product
- Confirm whether the wick construction is subject to the metal-core lead restriction.
- Assess whether the candle contains a hazardous substance that triggers cautionary labeling under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act.
- Determine whether a CPSC-enforced rule applicable to your product requires a certificate.
- Review the standards relevant to your design, including those for fire safety, warning labels, glass containers, emissions, and accessories.
ASTM lists F2058-07(2021) for candle fire-safety labeling; its page says the warning must be visible on the unit of sale (ASTM F2058-07(2021)). ASTM lists F2417-26 as addressing minimum fire-safety requirements for candles, while stating that it does not replace other safety practices or cover every safety concern (ASTM F2417-26). Check current editions, applicability, and legal duties with the relevant authorities or qualified advisers; standards and rules can change.

Choose a manageable initial range and one sales channel you can handle. Depending on your permissions and plan, that might mean direct online sales, a local market, or another route; each has different audience access, fees, shipping work, customer relationship, and local-permit implications. Verify the channel’s current terms and the rules that apply to your activity rather than assuming one route is universally best.

Track the information that helps you make decisions
- Sales, actual per-unit costs, fees, and shipping or packaging costs.
- Batch and component details so you can identify what went into each product.
- Customer questions, complaints, returns, and damaged items.
- Time spent making, packing, and supporting orders.
- Which products merit replenishment based on actual results rather than hoped-for demand.
