You can teach English online through a tutoring marketplace, an employer, or your own independent tutoring business. The right route depends on the students you want to teach, the platform’s current rules, and how much responsibility you want for finding clients and setting terms. A degree or teaching certificate is not universally required, but platform policies differ—and published pay figures are not guaranteed income.

Choose how you want to teach

Before paying for training or setting up a teaching space, decide how you want to find students and manage your work. The three main routes differ in control, support, and administrative effort.

Route How students find you Control and responsibilities
Tutoring marketplace You create a profile; the marketplace can help prospective students discover you. You may set availability and, on some platforms, your rate. You are responsible for presenting your offer and complying with platform policies and fees.
Teaching company or employer The employer may provide students or an established curriculum. Requirements, hours, teaching methods, and compensation vary by employer. Check the actual role terms rather than assuming every company works the same way.
Independent tutoring You attract students yourself. You have more control over your schedule, positioning, and pricing, but must handle client acquisition and organize the teaching arrangements.

Compare options on degree and certificate rules, eligible locations, whether applications are open, how students are sourced, rate-setting and payment terms, schedule expectations, learner age, lesson style, fees, cancellations, and included materials or classroom tools. These details can change; check the platform’s current official terms before committing.

What platform pay figures do—and do not—tell you

Cambly’s tutor page lists $0.17 per minute ($10.20 per hour) for Cambly and $0.20 per minute ($12 per hour) for Cambly Kids. These are Cambly’s published rates on its recruitment page accessed in 2026, not a promise of booked hours or net income. The same page says new tutor intake is temporarily limited. Check Cambly’s current tutor page.

Preply says English tutors set their own rates and reports an average of $15–25 per hour charged by English tutors on its platform. That is Preply’s platform-published average, not a guaranteed rate or a direct comparison with Cambly’s listed per-minute rates. Review Preply’s tutor information.

Neither figure establishes likely take-home earnings for a new tutor. When assessing a route, account for platform terms, actual booked teaching time, preparation, and the effort required to attract students.

Check qualifications before you invest in them

There is no universal degree or TEFL requirement for online English teaching. Requirements depend on the platform, employer, learner market, and role. A credential may help you qualify for some opportunities, demonstrate preparation, or build a specialty, but first check the rules for the specific work you want.

Marketplace requirements vary

Preply says applicants do not need a specific certificate or prior teaching experience, but it reviews applications and may reject applications in subjects with low demand. Its application guidance says applicants must be at least 18. See Preply’s tutor page and application guidance.

Cambly says a degree, teaching certificate, and prior teaching experience are not required, but its recruitment page also says intake is temporarily limited. Meeting a stated qualification rule does not mean applications are open or that a tutor will be accepted. Check Cambly’s recruitment page.

The TEFL Org publishes a list of platforms that it says may accept tutors without a degree or prior experience. Treat that roundup as a starting point to verify requirements directly; platform rules change, and the TEFL Org is also a training provider. Read its online-teaching requirements guide.

Understand what Preply’s Professional Tutor badge means

Preply distinguishes its general application requirements from its Professional Tutor badge. According to its Help Center, tutors can qualify for the badge by completing Preply’s free language teaching certificate course or presenting an accepted English-teaching certificate. Preply’s guidance describes accepted external courses as accredited by government or government-endorsed institutions and lasting at least 120 hours; its list includes examples such as TEFL/TESOL certificates, CELTA, and Trinity CertTESOL. The 120-hour figure is a criterion for listed external qualifications for this Preply badge—not a universal legal, hiring, or platform requirement. Read Preply’s Professional Tutor criteria.

Before enrolling in a course, check the provider’s recognition, practical teaching components, refund terms, and whether the platform or employer you are targeting accepts the credential. No certificate guarantees work, a specific rate, or acceptance everywhere.

Apply with a clear, useful profile

Make it easy for a prospective student to understand who you teach and what a lesson with you offers. State your target learners, lesson types, relevant experience or qualifications, and availability. An approachable introduction video can give students a sense of your communication style.

Preply’s application asks for profile information, a headshot, a description of your strengths, an introduction video of up to two minutes, and availability. Its Help Center says applications are normally reviewed within five business days, while its tutor page gives a different estimate of three business days. Because those published timelines differ, check the current application page rather than planning around a precise review time. Approval is not assured; Preply notes that low subject demand may result in rejection. See Preply’s application steps.

Plan lessons around learning, not the software

Cambridge English’s 2020 Quick-start guide to teaching English online says, “Teaching English online doesn’t have to be very different from teaching English in a face-to-face classroom.” The central work remains setting a goal, getting learners to participate, monitoring their language, and giving useful feedback. Chat, a whiteboard, and shared documents can support those familiar teaching tasks. Read Cambridge English’s guide.

Set a goal and structure the stages

Choose a realistic language objective, then plan the stages, timing, transitions, grouping, and feedback. For example, a speaking lesson might move from a short warm-up to a prompt-based task, followed by feedback on a few useful language points. Check that learners can access the platform, use the tools you have chosen, and hear you before class begins.

Match activities to the skill

  • Speaking: Use prompts and interaction; monitor learner language and decide whether feedback belongs during the task or after it.
  • Reading: Share a digital text and use annotation when it helps learners notice meaning or form. Respect copyright limits when sharing materials.
  • Listening: Confirm that learners can hear the recording clearly. Cambridge English recommends sharing audio through the call rather than playing it aloud into a microphone.
  • Writing: Use sentence-level practice, model-text analysis, shared documents, or pair planning as appropriate to the learners’ level.
  • Grammar and vocabulary: Present or elicit the target language, give learners practice, and check understanding.

Choose the simplest tool that serves the lesson objective. A whiteboard or shared document is useful only when it helps learners do something they need to learn.

Set up reliable audio, video, and internet

A practical starting setup is a computer or laptop, camera, headset with microphone, and dependable internet. The TEFL Org suggests 15 Mbps as a useful rule of thumb for stable video calls; this is its guidance, not a universal minimum imposed by every teaching platform. Actual needs vary with video quality, software, other network use, and platform requirements. See The TEFL Org’s equipment guidance.

  • Prioritize clear audio. A comfortable USB headset with a microphone can help learners hear speech clearly during speaking, listening, and pronunciation work. Check compatibility with your computer and teaching platform.
  • Use the camera you have first. A built-in camera may be adequate; a separate webcam is optional if the built-in one gives a poor image.
  • Make yourself visible. Good lighting and a tidy background can make it easier for learners to see you, but they do not replace good teaching or a stable connection.
  • Test the actual setup. Check the microphone, camera, call software, and connection before teaching, and close bandwidth-heavy activities on your network when needed.
