Usually, you can’t transfer a Visa gift card’s balance directly into your PayPal Balance. If the card issuer permits it, you may be able to add the card to PayPal and use it to pay for eligible purchases—but linking a card is not the same as moving its funds into PayPal. This guidance on PayPal Balance applies to U.S. accounts; card and account options vary by country and issuer.
Can I add a Visa gift card to PayPal?
Possibly. PayPal says a prepaid card may be linkable and usable for payments, depending on the issuer. Check the gift card’s terms for activation, online purchases, and wallet use. Even if PayPal accepts the card as a payment method, its stored value remains on the card rather than becoming PayPal Balance. PayPal describes direct transfers from prepaid cards to PayPal Balance as generally unavailable.

How to try adding the card for PayPal purchases
- Check the card first. Confirm its remaining balance, activation status, and issuer rules for online transactions or digital wallets.
- Try adding it in PayPal Wallet. Follow the prompts to add a payment card, if the issuer allows online use. PayPal’s gift-card guidance notes that support depends on the card, issuer, terms, and accounts involved. Review PayPal’s gift-card guidance.
- Use it at checkout if accepted. Select the linked card as the payment method for an eligible purchase. A successful link does not load the card’s funds into your PayPal Balance.
How to add money to PayPal Balance instead
For U.S. accounts, PayPal documents adding money from a confirmed bank account or an eligible Visa or Mastercard debit card. Prepaid gift cards are not listed as a direct Add Money source. In PayPal, open Wallet, choose Transfer Money, then Add money from your bank or debit card, if that option is available for your account. Follow the on-screen eligibility requirements. PayPal’s Add Money instructions and its U.S. Balance terms describe the available routes; features can vary by account.
Could CardCash exchange the gift card?
PayPal points users to CardCash as a way to exchange some unwanted gift cards for PayPal Balance. That guidance does not establish that CardCash accepts open-loop Visa gift cards. Check the exact card type’s eligibility and review the current offer before sharing card details; compare the amount offered, any fees or discount, payout timing, and country or account restrictions. - Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
What to do if the card won’t link
If PayPal or the issuer does not support the card for online payments, use the remaining balance for purchases at merchants that accept Visa gift cards, subject to the card’s terms. Avoid unofficial cash-out websites, and do not enter the card number or PIN unless you have verified the service and its terms.
