Starbucks arranged a small Newport Beach office for incoming CEO Brian Niccol as part of his August 2024 hiring terms, while keeping Seattle as his primary office. The arrangement meant he did not have to relocate to Seattle, but it did not replace the company’s headquarters or eliminate travel there. Reporting in July 2025 said the Newport Beach office had been completed and could also be used by other employees; a September 2026 filing still lists Seattle as Starbucks’s principal executive-office address, without saying whether the California outpost remains in use.
Why Starbucks arranged an office in Newport Beach
When Starbucks announced Niccol’s appointment in August 2024, coverage of his offer terms said he would not be required to move to Seattle. The arrangement included commuting to company headquarters as needed, a small remote office in Newport Beach, California, and an assistant.
Starbucks described Seattle as Niccol’s primary office. In August 2024, spokesperson Emily Albright told GeekWire: “Brian’s primary office and a majority of his time will be spent in our Seattle Support Center or our visiting partners and customers in our stores, roasteries, roasting facilities and offices around the world,”
The terms therefore combined location flexibility with substantial in-person work and travel. They did not make Newport Beach the company’s headquarters or establish how often Niccol would commute to Seattle.

What was built—and what is known about its use
In July 2025, Entrepreneur reported that Starbucks had constructed a 4,624-square-foot office in Newport Beach, completed on July 2, 2025. B17 News also reported that construction was completed on July 2.
A Starbucks spokesperson told B17 News in July 2025: “Like every company, we want our CEO to be as productive as possible given the intense demands on his time,” and said Niccol could use a Starbucks office in California with meeting space. The spokesperson added that it “will also be used by other Starbucks partners (employees).” That describes intended availability, not confirmed employee use.

How the arrangement compared with employee office expectations
The distinction is between a negotiated CEO arrangement and policies Starbucks announced for corporate staff. Those policies changed over time, and the requirements did not necessarily apply identically to every employee or remote leader.
| Work-location issue | Niccol’s arrangement | Corporate employee expectations |
|---|---|---|
| Location flexibility | Small Newport Beach office included in his hiring terms; Seattle remained his primary office, according to Starbucks statements reported by GeekWire in August 2024. | Starbucks announced a three-day-a-week office policy in 2023. In July 2025, it announced a four-day in-office expectation for corporate staff, to begin in October 2025. |
| Travel to Seattle | He was expected to commute to headquarters as required; the sources do not state a recurring schedule. | The cited policy reports do not specify a comparable Seattle travel requirement for employees. |
| Relocation | His offer terms said he did not have to relocate to Seattle. | Associated July 2025 reporting described relocation requirements for some remote leaders; it does not establish one rule for all employees. |
In a January 2023 memo quoted by GeekWire, then-interim CEO Howard Schultz wrote: “We are a company rooted in human connection. We must have authentic and deep human connection everywhere we work,” reflecting the rationale behind the earlier in-office policy.

Is Newport Beach still an active Starbucks office?
Starbucks’s September 22, 2026 Form 8-K lists its principal executive offices at 2401 Utah Avenue South, Seattle, Washington. The filing does not address the Newport Beach satellite, so it confirms Seattle’s principal-office address but does not establish whether the California office is still operating or being used.
