How to Use Uniswap: A Beginner’s Guide to Swapping Tokens

To swap tokens with Uniswap, open the official Uniswap app, connect a wallet, choose the token you want to trade and the token you want to receive, enter an amount, review the quote and transaction details, then approve the transaction in your wallet. The exact app screens, supported wallets and available networks can change; the official documentation cited here explains the protocol and transaction flow, not a current screen-by-screen consumer tutorial.

How to make a swap on Uniswap

  1. Open the official Uniswap app. Check the web address carefully before connecting a wallet. Do not follow an unfamiliar link from a message or advertisement.
  2. Connect a wallet you control. Your wallet is used to authorize transactions. Never share its recovery phrase or private keys, and do not connect or sign if the request is unexpected.
  3. Select the tokens and enter an amount. Confirm the token identities and network shown in the app and wallet. Similar names or symbols do not establish that a token is the one you intend to trade.
  4. Review the quote before proceeding. Check the estimated amount to receive, the route and applicable swap fee, price impact, slippage setting, and network cost if shown. These details can affect the outcome and total cost.
  5. Confirm only if the wallet request matches your intent. Your wallet signs the transaction before it is submitted onchain. A quote or transaction-data response does not itself execute a swap; the user must authorize and submit the transaction.
  6. Check the transaction status. Onchain transactions can fail or take time to confirm. Avoid submitting another swap until you understand the status of the first one.

What happens when you swap

Uniswap is an automated market maker protocol built on Ethereum. Instead of matching buyers and sellers through a traditional order book, a swap trades against token reserves held in a pool. In the basic constant-product model, the two reserve balances are related by x × y = k. A trade changes the reserves and therefore the exchange rate; a larger trade relative to the pool’s depth generally causes a larger price impact. In versions 3 and 4, liquidity providers can concentrate liquidity within selected price ranges. Uniswap’s explanation of how the protocol works describes these mechanics.

The transaction flow described in Uniswap’s developer documentation includes checking whether token approval is needed, obtaining a quote, preparing transaction data, and then having the user sign and submit. Those are underlying integration steps, not API calls a typical app user needs to perform. The key point for a wallet user is that the wallet is the authorization step: review what it asks you to approve rather than treating a displayed quote as a completed trade. Uniswap’s trading overview describes the quote and signing flow.

How to compare swap routes and costs

There is no single fee that applies to every Uniswap swap. The fee depends on the protocol version and pool, and protocol-level fees may also apply where enabled. Compare the actual route and final quote rather than assuming all swaps cost the same.

What to compare Why it matters
Estimated output and price impact A pool’s reserves affect how much the rate moves as a trade is made. Compare the expected output for the same input and consider whether a route’s price impact is acceptable. Uniswap explains pool mechanics and price impact.
Pool swap fee Uniswap’s fee documentation lists a 0.30% swap fee for v2 pools; standard v3 tiers of 0.05%, 0.30% and 1%, with other tiers possible through governance; and configurable fees in v4. These are version- and pool-specific parameters, not a universal fee for every trade. See Uniswap’s fee documentation.
Protocol fee Uniswap’s fee documentation says protocol fees are active on v2 pools and select v3 pools following the UNIfication governance proposal passed in December 2025. The documented initial values and activation can change through governance, so inspect current details rather than assuming a fixed protocol fee. See Uniswap’s fee documentation.
Network cost This is transaction-specific. The documentation cited here does not establish a current amount, so rely on the cost shown for your own transaction rather than a fixed estimate from an older guide.
Slippage tolerance and minimum output Slippage protection limits how much the execution can differ from the quote. If the market moves beyond the allowed tolerance, a transaction may fail; weak protection can allow a worse result. Check the setting shown for your transaction before signing.

Wallet approvals and safety checks

Uniswap’s transaction flow may require token approval before a swap can proceed. An approval authorizes a contract to use a token; it is distinct from the swap itself. Read each wallet request carefully, verify the token and network, and do not approve or sign if the details are unclear or inconsistent with what you selected. Uniswap’s documentation establishes that the user wallet signs transactions, but it does not establish that every token or transaction is safe. Treat token identity and approval scope as your responsibility.

For developers submitting swaps through smart contracts, Uniswap recommends enforcing slippage limits with amountOutMinimum or using an onchain price oracle. Its documentation warns that setting minimum output to zero can leave a contract vulnerable to sandwich attacks and price manipulation. This is a developer-specific safeguard, but it illustrates why a swap should not be allowed to execute at any price. Read Uniswap’s trading overview and safety note.
