The card’s former checking-like features—such as direct deposit, bill pay and ATM access—are no longer available on that closed account.
What happened to Amex Serve?
Serve’s notice says, “Serve® American Express® Prepaid Debit Accounts were discontinued on June 2, 2026.” The company says the accounts officially closed the following day and that the Amex cards are no longer available for purchase. This is a status update, not a usable setup guide: do not try to open, load or make payments from a closed Amex Serve account.

How Amex Serve used to work like checking
Before closure, the Amex prepaid account combined several functions people often associate with checking: it could receive eligible direct deposits, accept funds through several methods, provide ATM cash access and support bill payments through Serve’s own Bill Pay service. These are historical features, not actions available on the closed Amex account.

#1 Best Overall
- Gift Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
- This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
- To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
Adding money
Serve’s account-use FAQ listed incoming direct deposit, cash reloads at participating retailers, mobile check capture and transfers initiated from an external bank or money app as ways to add funds. For an external transfer, the user initiated it from the outside bank or app, which could charge a fee. These descriptions do not make the closed Amex account usable today. See Serve’s account-use FAQ.
Receiving paychecks or government payments
Historically, an Amex Serve customer could find account and routing numbers in the Money In section and provide them to an employer or benefits provider for an eligible incoming paycheck or government payment. Serve said the numbers were only for adding those deposits—not for sending payments to billers. Employer setup procedures varied, and activation could take one or two pay periods. These steps are no longer actionable for the closed account. See Serve’s direct-deposit instructions.
Paying bills
Serve Bill Pay was a separate outgoing payment feature; customers did not pay a bill by giving the biller the Serve account and routing numbers. Historically, a user added a business or person as a payee under Money Out > Bill Pay and submitted the payment there. Serve said registered business payees were generally paid electronically in two business days, while an unregistered payee paid by mailed check normally took about five business days.
The Amex Bill Pay service ended on February 24, 2026, before the account closure. Serve’s former Amex Pay Bills Guarantee required a payment request at least six days before its due date and also stated a six-business-day condition for protection. Those were historical conditions, not a present guarantee or coverage for payments on a closed account. See Serve’s Bill Pay information.

Getting cash at an ATM
Serve’s ATM guidance described MoneyPass withdrawals as free for eligible account types and said fees could apply at non-network ATMs. For the former Amex prepaid accounts, the page described a Serve fee of up to $2.50 at non-MoneyPass ATMs; an ATM operator fee or a declined-transaction fee could be additional. This is historical product guidance, not a current promise or a fee schedule for Serve’s Visa products. See Serve’s ATM information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Amex Serve compares with checking now
For a present-day decision, the main distinction is availability: the Amex Serve account is closed, so its former checking-like features cannot provide a working alternative to a bank checking account.
| Feature | Former Amex Serve account | Current Serve products |
|---|---|---|
| Can you open or use it? | No. Discontinued June 2, 2026; accounts officially closed June 3, 2026. Serve’s Amex notice. | Serve currently describes separate Visa products on its homepage. Availability and terms are product-specific. Serve. |
| Payment rails | Historically accepted eligible incoming deposits and offered Bill Pay; Bill Pay ended February 24, 2026. Account and routing numbers were for incoming deposits, not biller payments. Direct-deposit instructions; Bill Pay information. | Do not assume the former Amex payment setup applies. Check the applicable product agreement. |
| Funding and cash access | Historical guidance listed retailer cash reloads, mobile check capture, external transfers, direct deposit and ATM access; none restores access to the closed account. Account-use FAQ; ATM information. | Methods and fees depend on the specific Visa product and its current terms. |
| Overdraft and limits | Current terms cannot establish the former Amex account’s exact limits or protections. | Serve’s current FAQ says its listed accounts cannot be overdrawn. Fees and limits depend on each product’s agreement. Serve FAQ. |
What to use instead
If you need an account for paychecks, bill payments or cash access, compare currently available checking or prepaid products using their own agreements—not the former Amex Serve feature set. Confirm whether the product supports incoming direct deposit, how outgoing bill payments are sent, what ATM and reload fees apply, and whether it permits overdrafts. Serve’s Visa offerings are distinct products; review the agreement for the specific product before relying on its features or costs.
