Use the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments Search Tool to look up reported financial relationships between covered doctors and drug or medical-device companies. Choose Individual Provider, search the clinician’s name, and check identifying details before interpreting any result. The current search covers program years 2019–2025, was last updated in June 2026, and does not display providers with no payment in the preceding seven years.

How do I find out if my doctor gets money from drug companies?

  1. Open the CMS Open Payments Search Tool.
  2. Select Individual Provider and enter the doctor’s name. Use location or other available identifying details to distinguish clinicians with similar names.
  3. Open the profile that matches your doctor and review the listed records. Check the program year, reporting company, amount, payment category or nature, and any product or context shown.
  4. If the search does not find the right person, try alternate spellings, remove spaces at the beginning or end of the name, or search fewer name characters before narrowing the results.
  5. For several years of records or a broader analysis, use the CMS Dataset Explorer to filter, sort, and export a subset, or download a dataset.

CMS says a provider with no payment in the last seven years will not appear in the search results. That means no result is not a complete record of every possible past relationship; use CMS archives if you need older program years.

What does an Open Payments record mean?

Open Payments is a federal disclosure program. Applicable manufacturers and group purchasing organizations report certain transfers of value and interests to CMS annually. Covered recipients include physicians, certain non-physician practitioners, and teaching hospitals, subject to program rules and exceptions. CMS publishes the reported information; it does not determine whether a relationship is beneficial or a potential conflict.

General payments

These are payments or transfers of value that are not connected with a research agreement or protocol. The reported item may have a specific nature or context, so read the record rather than treating every entry as the same kind of payment.

Research payments

These are transfers of value connected with a formal research agreement or protocol. Some research and development records can be delayed from publication. Reporting entities may request a delay that can be renewed annually for up to four calendar years after the payment date, so the newest public records may not include every recent research relationship.

Ownership and investment interests

These records concern ownership or investment interests held by physicians or their immediate family members in reporting entities. They describe a different type of financial relationship from a payment for a meal, travel, or other item.

Can I see what pharmaceutical companies paid my doctor in earlier years?

CMS provides searchable detailed data for program years 2019–2025 and archives for 2013–2018. Its Dataset Explorer and data-download page are useful when you need to examine multiple years, companies, or customized groupings. CMS cautions that full datasets are large; the Explorer may be easier for a focused question.

For scale, CMS reports 17.07 million published records and $14.67 billion in payments and other transfers of value for Program Year 2025. Separately, its current overview reported 93.87 million records and $82.24 billion in payments and ownership or investment interests over the seven-year period, as of October 8, 2026. These are program-wide totals, not amounts received by an average doctor.

How should I compare two doctors’ records?

Compare like with like. A useful comparison keeps the same program-year range and separates payment counts from total amounts. Then examine categories and context rather than relying on one raw dollar figure.

Does a payment prove a doctor was influenced or acted improperly?

No. A disclosure alone does not establish that a clinician changed care, endorsed a product, or acted improperly. CMS cautions that the transparency display of a financial relationship does not necessarily mean the relationship is improper, and says it does not comment on whether relationships are beneficial or potential conflicts. Describe an entry as a reported payment or relationship, and consider its category and context rather than drawing a conclusion from the dollar amount alone.

Before making any judgment about a specific clinician, confirm the profile belongs to the right person. Similar names and incomplete searches can lead to mistaken conclusions; CMS’s records are disclosures submitted and attested to by reporting entities.
