The best fit depends less on a promise of easy income than on your skills, available work blocks, childcare, startup costs, and whether you can meet deadlines or take uninterrupted calls. These 25 legitimate ideas are starting points—not earnings guarantees.
This guide is U.S.-focused. The IRS includes many of these activities among common forms of gig work, but income, licensing rules, platform terms, and taxes vary by location. No reliable typical-earnings figure applies across all 25 options.
25 legitimate ways to make money as a stay-at-home mom
The ideas below are grouped by how money is earned. Many can be tested on a small scale, but “from home” does not always mean “while actively caring for a child”: client calls, delivery windows, shipping deadlines, or focused work may require uninterrupted time or backup childcare.
Freelance and remote services
- Freelance writing: Write blog posts, newsletters, product descriptions, or other business content if you have strong writing and research skills. Deadlines are common, and client work often requires quiet focus.
- Proofreading and editing: Review documents for grammar, clarity, and consistency. Consider whether you have relevant experience or training, and agree on scope and turnaround before taking work.
- Virtual assistance: Handle tasks such as inbox organization, scheduling, data entry, or customer follow-up for a business. Some duties can be asynchronous; others require set availability.
- Social media support: Draft posts, prepare content calendars, or moderate comments for clients. Clarify response-time expectations, access permissions, and who approves posts.
- Graphic design: Create marketing materials, presentations, or digital assets if you already have design skills and suitable software. Client revisions can affect how much time a project takes.
- Bookkeeping: Help small businesses organize transactions or reconcile records if you have the appropriate knowledge. Financial data is sensitive, so use secure processes and do not take on work beyond your competence.
- Online tutoring: Teach a subject you know through scheduled sessions. This usually requires uninterrupted time, a reliable connection, and a schedule that matches students’ availability.
- Online lessons or coaching: Offer instruction in a skill you can credibly teach, such as music, language, or a professional subject. Be clear about your qualifications and the results you can—and cannot—promise.
- Transcription or captioning: Convert audio or video into text if you have strong listening and typing skills. Check the task’s accuracy requirements, deadlines, and compensation terms before accepting.
- Translation: Translate written material if you are fluent in the relevant languages and can preserve meaning accurately. Specialized or certified translation may require additional qualifications.
Selling products and creative work
- Sell handmade goods: Make crafts, clothing, décor, or other products to sell directly or through a marketplace. Include materials, packaging, shipping, fees, and time when deciding whether an item is worth offering.
- Sell digital downloads: Create items such as printable planners, templates, or learning materials. A digital product avoids packing individual orders, but making it visible and finding buyers still takes work.
- Resell secondhand goods: Find and sell used clothing, books, toys, or household items. Sorting, photographing, listing, storing, and shipping inventory all take time; selling items you already own can be a low-commitment way to test the process.
- Sell vintage or collectible items: Source or list items for buyers who value their age, rarity, or condition. Learn how to describe and price items accurately, and account for sourcing and shipping costs.
- Sell baked goods or other food products: If local rules allow it, sell products to customers in your area. Food safety, permitted product types, labeling, and licensing requirements vary, so check with the relevant local and state authorities first.
- Offer photography: Take portraits, event photos, or product images if you have suitable equipment and skills. Sessions and editing require dedicated time, and local shoots may involve travel.
- Create and license original content: Sell or license illustrations, photos, music, or other original work. Buyers and licensing terms can vary; read the terms carefully and keep track of what rights you grant.
Local and on-demand work
- Pet sitting or dog walking: Care for pets in your home or a client’s, or walk dogs locally. The work depends on reliable availability and may require travel, insurance, or local compliance checks.
- Babysitting or in-home childcare: Care for other children, potentially alongside your own, if the arrangement suits your household. Check state and local rules, including whether a license is required for the number of children or type of care.
- Cleaning or home organization: Provide cleaning, decluttering, or organizing services in clients’ homes. This is local, hands-on work that generally requires time away from your own home and may have physical demands.
- Errands and task services: Run errands, assemble items, or complete other short jobs for people nearby. The IRS identifies errands and tasks as examples of gig work; consider travel time, availability, and any platform terms.
- Delivery or rideshare driving: Deliver goods or provide rides through a platform if you meet its requirements and have appropriate transportation. These jobs require time away from home and may bring vehicle, fuel, insurance, and other operating costs.
- Seasonal or event work: Take temporary shifts such as event staffing, holiday retail, or seasonal support. This can be a defined way to earn money, but shifts may be fixed and childcare needs may change with them.
Renting out assets or space
- Rent a room or part of your property: If you own or are authorized to rent your home, consider short- or longer-term rentals. Check lease or association restrictions, local rules, insurance, taxes, and the time required to manage guests or tenants.
- Rent equipment or other items: Earn from eligible equipment or belongings you own, such as tools or recreational gear. Confirm the item can be rented safely, understand the platform’s coverage and fees, and account for wear, damage, and handoffs.
How to choose an idea that fits your life
Compare options by the demands they place on your time and resources—not just by whether they sound flexible. A task you can pause may still have a firm deadline; a home-based job may still require uninterrupted calls.

DATED format enhances time management; Ideal for year-long financial planning.
- Available work blocks: Decide whether you have short, irregular windows or dependable stretches of focused time. Asynchronous writing or product listing may suit different blocks than tutoring or scheduled client calls.
- Childcare and interruptions: Identify which tasks you can safely pause and which require supervision-free time. Do not assume you can reliably provide active childcare while meeting another person’s deadlines or handling a live call.
- Existing skills and training: Start with work you can already do competently. For regulated, financial, food-related, or specialized services, check what training, credentials, or local permission may be required.
- Startup and ongoing costs: List likely expenses—such as supplies, equipment, software, transport, platform fees, or inventory—before committing. Avoid borrowing or buying in bulk based only on projected sales.
- Customer contact and location: Consider whether you are comfortable with calls, in-person visits, shipping, or managing customers. Local services and food sales may be subject to rules that differ by state or municipality.
- Time to test demand: A service offered with tools you already have may be easier to test than a product requiring inventory. Begin with a small, clearly defined offer and see whether genuine customers are interested before expanding.
- Income variability: Freelance projects, sales, rentals, and on-demand shifts can fluctuate. Treat them as uncertain income until you have a track record rather than relying on advertised earnings claims.
How to screen out work-from-home scams
Before giving a company personal information, paying money, or accepting a check, verify the opportunity independently. The Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Advice guidance, “How to avoid a side hustle scam,” flags fast-money promises for little effort, pressure to decide quickly, and requests for upfront payment. The FTC puts it plainly: “No legitimate gig will make you pay for expenses, training, or anything else to get the job.”
- Search independently for the company and the role; do not rely only on a recruiter’s messages or links.
- Use a verifiable official application page and confirm that the opening appears there.
- Be wary of unusually high earnings claims, vague duties, pressure to accept immediately, or fees for access, training, or supplies.
- Never deposit a check and send part of the money back, buy gift cards, or forward money as part of a job. The FTC warns that fake-check schemes may use exactly this pattern; see “How to avoid work-from-home job scams.”
- Do not share sensitive financial details before verifying the employer and the role.
If a seller is offering a covered business opportunity rather than an ordinary job or gig, a different rule may apply. Under the FTC’s business-opportunity rule, covered sellers must provide a one-page disclosure document at least seven days before a prospective buyer signs a contract or pays. If the seller makes an earnings claim, it must also provide a separate earnings-claim statement and maintain written substantiation. This requirement does not mean every job or side gig is a covered business opportunity. See the FTC’s guidance for sellers of work-at-home or other business opportunities.

Taxes and recordkeeping for gig income
In the United States, income from gig work is taxable and must be reported even when the work is part-time or temporary, payment is in cash, goods, or virtual currency, or no information form arrives. The IRS’s Gig Economy Tax Center covers work involving services or goods, including online sales, rentals, errands, creative and professional services, and other temporary or on-demand activities.
Keep records of income and relevant expenses as you go, and consult the IRS’s current guidance for filing and deductions. Whether an activity is a hobby or a business depends on its facts and circumstances—not a single income threshold. The IRS points to considerations such as whether you conduct the activity in a businesslike manner and whether you have the knowledge needed to carry it out successfully; see “Is that activity just a hobby or a business?” For questions about your own filing obligations, consult a qualified tax professional.
