Teenagers can earn money online by selling a service, offering goods, or creating content—but which platforms they can use depends on their age, adult supervision, and the platform’s rules. The “up to $10K/month” figure is not a typical or verified teen outcome: the official sources cited here establish eligibility and tax rules, not how much teenagers earn. Treat substantial income as uncertain, not promised.
This guide focuses on U.S. tax guidance and platform policies. If you live elsewhere, check your local tax, child-work, and online-safety rules with a parent or guardian.
Which online earning route fits a teenager?
Start with something you can genuinely do or make, then check whether you can use the platform under its age rules. The three routes below are supported by the platform and IRS guidance cited in this guide; none is established as a faster or higher-paying option.
| Route | What you could offer | Relevant platform rules | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Creative or professional services | A skill-based service you can deliver responsibly, such as a design or other creative task. | Fiverr allows users ages 13–17 only through an account owned by a parent or legal guardian, with permission. Users under 13 are not permitted. Fiverr’s account rules | Agree on the work, deadline, price, and revision expectations with the client, with an adult helping you review communications and payment arrangements. |
| Selling goods online | Goods you make or otherwise qualify to sell under the marketplace’s rules. | On Etsy, sellers ages 13–17 need parent or guardian permission and direct supervision. The adult must own and register the account, be responsible for its activity, and provide the financial information. Etsy also directs shops to disclose members. Etsy’s minors policy | Consider the time and costs involved in making, listing, packing, and fulfilling orders; follow marketplace rules and agree with your adult supervisor who handles each task. |
| Creating video content | Videos for an audience, with possible monetization if the channel meets YouTube’s requirements. | AdSense for YouTube account holders must be 18 or older. An under-18 creator needs an approved parent or guardian’s account linked for video monetization. YouTube’s under-18 AdSense guidance | Building an audience and meeting monetization requirements takes time and does not guarantee income. Publishing also raises privacy and local child-work questions. |
The IRS identifies online sales and creative or professional services as examples of gig activity. Choosing a route does not remove the need to keep records or check the rules that apply to you.

Can you earn money online at 13, 14, 15, 16, or 17?
Age alone does not determine access. The rules differ by platform, and a parent or guardian may need to own the account, provide financial information, or supervise activity. Check the current policy before creating an account; platform requirements can change.
- Ages 13–17: Etsy permits minors to sell under its adult-account and direct-supervision requirements. Fiverr permits minors in this age range to use the site only through a parent- or guardian-owned account with permission.
- Under 13: Fiverr does not permit users under 13. The Etsy policy cited here covers ages 13–17, so do not assume it provides permission for younger users.
- Under 18 and YouTube ads: A creator needs an approved AdSense for YouTube account belonging to a parent or guardian over 18 to monetize videos.
These are platform-specific rules, not a general legal determination that every kind of online work is allowed for every minor. Ask an adult to check local requirements as well.

What does it take to earn from YouTube?
For the YouTube Partner Program, YouTube’s overview lists a threshold of 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours during the previous 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views during the previous 90 days. Meeting a threshold does not guarantee acceptance: YouTube also requires policy compliance and review, and regional and feature-specific conditions apply. See YouTube’s Partner Program overview and eligibility rules.
For creators under 18, an approved adult’s AdSense for YouTube account is needed for video monetization. That payment arrangement does not remove separate age requirements for other features. Channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks require creators to be at least 18, along with other eligibility conditions; consult YouTube’s commerce product policies.

These requirements are gates to eligibility, not an earnings estimate. The official platform and tax sources cited here do not establish how much teenagers typically make or support $10,000 per month as a representative result.

How should a teen handle online income and taxes?
For U.S. readers, the IRS says gig income must be reported, including income from temporary or part-time work and income for which no information return was issued. Its guidance also covers non-cash payments. Keep a record of what you receive and the expenses related to the work; do not assume a platform will provide every record you need.
The IRS says a person must file a tax return when net self-employment earnings from gig work are $400 or more. That is a filing threshold for this situation—not a declaration that income below $400 is automatically free of every tax or filing obligation. A teenager’s dependent status, other income, and state rules may affect what applies. Review the IRS gig economy tax center and IRS guidance on taxes for gig work, and ask a parent or guardian and, where needed, a qualified tax adviser about your circumstances.

How can teens avoid scams and protect their information?
Before accepting an offer, research the business independently. The Federal Trade Commission recommends searching the company’s name alongside words such as “review,” “scam,” or “complaint.” Its guidance flags requests for driver’s license or bank account information before an interview as a warning sign. See the FTC’s Job and Money-Making Scams and work-at-home scam guidance.

- Do not pay upfront to unlock a job or promised earnings without first checking the offer with a trusted adult.
- Treat pressure to keep an opportunity secret as a reason to stop and ask a parent, guardian, or another trusted adult for help.
- Use platform-approved account and payment arrangements; do not evade age restrictions by misrepresenting who owns an account.
What extra safeguards apply when a teen makes videos?
Get a parent or guardian’s consent and discuss what information should stay private before filming or posting. Consider how to moderate comments and avoid revealing details that could identify or locate you. YouTube advises creators to consider privacy and consent and to check local rules that may cover permits, work hours, schooling, and revenue sharing. Those requirements vary by location; see YouTube’s best practices for content with children.

A practical way to get started
- Choose one offer. Pick a service you can deliver or goods you can make, or decide what kind of videos you can create consistently. Avoid building a plan around an earnings claim.
- Check the rules with an adult. Read the current platform policy for your age and location. Confirm who must own the account, supervise the activity, and provide financial information.
- Agree on boundaries before taking work. Set expectations for the task, price, timing, communication, and how any payment will be handled. Keep personal information private.
- Track money and related expenses. Save records as you go so you and your parent or guardian can review income, costs, and any tax questions.
- Review before expanding. Check whether the work remains safe, manageable alongside school, and compliant with platform and local rules before taking on more.
