The easiest first step is launching a simple website; earning from it takes more than putting it online. Choose a specific audience, publish useful original content or offer a service, then use a revenue model that fits what visitors need. Advertising and affiliate links are two common options, but neither guarantees approval, traffic, or income.
What you need before a website can earn
A website is the platform, not the business model. Before adding monetization, decide who the site is for and what useful problem it will solve. A focused site—such as one that helps first-time renters compare moving costs—gives you a clearer basis for choosing topics, attracting relevant visitors, and deciding what to offer.
Start with a useful, specific site
- Choose an audience and need. Identify a group of people and a question, task, or decision your site can help with.
- Create original value. Publish practical explanations, comparisons, tools, or firsthand expertise that give readers a reason to visit. Amazon says its Associates application review considers whether a site has original content that benefits customers; it does not establish a required number of posts or visitors.
- Control the site. You will need a domain name and a way to build and host the site. Google says an AdSense applicant must own the site submitted for verification. A website builder, hosting plan, and domain are setup options—not revenue sources by themselves.
Keep the first version manageable: a clear home page, a few substantial pieces of content, and straightforward navigation are more useful than a large, unfocused site. There is no source-backed post count that guarantees acceptance into an advertising or affiliate program.
Ways a website can make money
Two established approaches are selling advertising space and earning commissions through affiliate referrals. They work differently: ads monetize space or ad activity, while affiliate commissions depend on qualifying actions after a reader follows a tagged link.

| Model | What can trigger revenue | What you need to do | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display advertising | Ads shown or interacted with on your site, according to the advertising program’s terms. | Own and control a suitable site, apply or connect it to a program, add its ad code, and follow its requirements. | Code alone does not ensure approval, visitors, or meaningful earnings. |
| Affiliate links | A qualifying purchase or other qualifying action after a visitor follows a tagged referral link, as defined by the program. | Publish relevant content, join a program if accepted, use its links correctly, and disclose the relationship conspicuously. | A link does not itself earn a commission; eligibility and qualifying outcomes matter. |
| Other commercial models | Potentially a sale, booking, subscription, sponsorship, or direct advertising agreement. | Define an offer and arrange the relevant sales or commercial process. | Terms, eligibility, and likely earnings vary; these models are not covered by the program details below. |
Display advertising
Google describes AdSense as a publisher service: a site owner makes ad space available by placing Google’s ad code on the site, and Google’s system connects publishers with advertisers. The basic sequence is to create and control a site, build content, submit or connect the site for review, and follow the program’s requirements. Approval and revenue are not automatic.
Advertising can also involve direct ad sales, ad networks, and sell-side platforms; Google’s 2023 publisher update describes publishers using combinations of these technologies. That does not establish which approach is best for a beginner or what it will pay.
Affiliate links
Affiliate marketing pays according to a program’s rules when a referral produces a qualifying action. For example, Amazon Associates allows participants to monetize a website with tagged links and may pay commissions on qualifying purchases, subject to its agreement and policies. Joining a program, publishing a link, or receiving clicks does not guarantee a commission.
Rank #2
Amazon says its application review looks for original content that gives customers a beneficial reason to visit, such as useful insight or a distinctive experience. Do not build a site around copied descriptions or assume a particular traffic or article count will secure acceptance.

A site can also support a service, a digital product, memberships, sponsored content, or direct advertising arrangements. These are possible business models rather than guaranteed income streams: you need an offer people value and must establish the terms and process for selling or delivering it. Choose one that fits your audience instead of adding unrelated offers simply to monetize every page.
How to start without overcomplicating it
- Pick a clear audience and topic. Write down who you want to help and what they should be able to do or understand after visiting.
- Choose a simple site setup. Select a website builder or another publishing setup, arrange web hosting if required, and register a domain name. Compare costs and features for your needs; no particular provider is necessary to earn website revenue.
- Publish useful original pages. Start with content that answers real questions or helps visitors make decisions. Make the site easy to navigate and keep information accurate.
- Choose a fitting revenue model. Consider advertising if the site is built to attract an audience for content, affiliate referrals if relevant products naturally help readers, or a service or offer if you can provide one.
- Check program terms and apply. Review current eligibility, site ownership, link or code requirements, and any other rules directly with the program. Meeting the basic setup steps is not a promise of acceptance.
- Disclose affiliate relationships. Put a clear, conspicuous disclosure near affiliate links or reviews, in a place readers can notice before relying on them. Amazon Associates requires the statement: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.”
- Improve based on real response. Observe which pages visitors use and whether the site is meeting their needs. Refine content and offers rather than assuming that more pages or more links automatically mean more income.
What to expect—and what not to assume
There is no reliable earnings figure, universal traffic threshold, or standard time to profitability established for a new website. Amazon’s operating agreement says it makes no representation about the traffic or commission income an associate can expect. Income depends on factors such as whether people find the site, how useful they find it, which program rules apply, and whether visitors take qualifying actions.
Rank #3
“Easy” can reasonably mean that publishing a basic site is approachable. It should not mean effortless income, guaranteed approval, or passive earnings. A site can take time and ongoing work to develop, and it may not become profitable.

Program terms are part of the business model. For affiliate links, Amazon’s guidance says disclosures should be clear and conspicuous, placed near links or product reviews, and easy for customers to notice. Its required Associates statement is: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” Requirements can also depend on jurisdiction and context; U.S. creators can consult the FTC’s endorsement FAQ for guidance on endorsements and disclosures.
