Buy a Colorado fishing license through Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s (CPW) official fishing-license page, which links to CPWShop. First confirm whether CPW considers you a resident, then choose a license based on your age and how long you plan to fish. The fees below are CPW’s listed 2026 prices; check the purchase page and CPWShop for current options and your final total before paying.
1. Check whether you need a license
Under CPW’s stated rule, people under 16 may fish without a license and may take a full bag and possession limit. Anglers 16 and older generally need an appropriate, valid resident or nonresident fishing license and a customer identification number unless an exception applies. A second-rod stamp is required when using a second line, including for an angler under 16. Check CPW’s current rules for any special circumstances.
2. Determine resident or nonresident status
Resident status is based on CPW’s criteria, not simply on where you own property. For adults, CPW generally requires a valid current Colorado driver’s license or ID issued at least six months earlier, six consecutive months of Colorado residence immediately before buying or applying for a CPW product, and a Colorado primary residence. Youth under 18 whose primary legal guardian qualifies as a resident are considered residents.
CPW provides specific pathways for some students and active-duty military members and their families. It also lists circumstances that disqualify a person from claiming resident status, including holding an out-of-state driver’s license or recently purchasing or accepting another state’s resident hunting, fishing, or trapping license. Use CPW’s residency requirements if you recently moved or have a student, military, or other unusual situation.

3. Choose a license for your age and trip length
CPW’s listed 2026 fees are below. The fees include a $1.25 search-and-rescue fee and a $1.50 Wildlife Education Fund fee, according to CPW. Confirm the total in CPWShop before payment.

CPW says anglers must purchase a habitat stamp with a license, with one ordinarily required per year. The first two one-day or additional-day fishing licenses are exempt from the habitat-stamp fee; the fee is assessed when a third is purchased. CPW lists exceptions for certain disability and lifetime-license categories. Check the purchase page to confirm whether an exception applies to you and what your checkout total includes.

For 2026, annual fishing licenses are valid March 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027. CPW describes the annual period as 13 months, from March 1 through March 31 of the following year. The dates are also set out in the approved general-provisions regulations.
4. Buy through CPW and keep proof
- Open CPW’s fishing-license page and select “Purchase a Fishing License” to go to CPWShop.
- Choose the license that matches your resident status, age, and trip duration. Provide government-issued identification and any residency proof CPW requires.
- Review the selected license, any applicable habitat stamp or second-rod stamp, and the final price in CPWShop before completing the purchase. CPW’s page confirms this official purchase route but does not document every checkout screen or payment step.
- Save the confirmation. If CPW issues a temporary authorization number (TAN), keep it available while fishing.
A TAN may be used until a mailed license arrives and is valid for 45 days after purchase. CPW says one-day or five-day licenses with selected dates within 15 days of purchase are not mailed; for those licenses, carry the TAN shown in the email confirmation. CPW also lists specified resident license types that can be displayed in the myColorado app; check the current page for eligible types.

5. Check rules for the water you plan to fish
A license does not replace local or species-specific regulations. Before heading out, consult CPW’s current online fishing brochure and its Fishing Atlas. CPW says the Atlas includes fishing opportunities, access, stocked waters, boat ramps, special regulations, and stream-gage information. Review the rules for your destination and carry your valid license or TAN while fishing.
