Contact the state or jurisdiction that issued your fishing license. First check the account or email used to buy it for a reprint option; if you bought it from a license agent or agency office, ask that seller or office whether it can issue a duplicate. Rules, fees, and accepted formats vary, so confirm what applies to the exact item you lost before fishing.
Start with the state and the item you lost
There is no single nationwide replacement process. The issuing jurisdiction sets the rules, and replacing a basic fishing license may differ from replacing a hard card, validation, permit, tag, or catch/report card. Identify both the state and the specific document before choosing a replacement route.
A confirmation email or purchase record can help locate the transaction. Keep any order or confirmation number available when contacting the issuing system or seller.
How to request a replacement
- Check the issuing system. Sign in to the account used for purchase and look for options such as “reprint,” “view and print,” or “duplicate.” Check the purchase confirmation email as well.
- Contact the original seller if needed. If you bought the license from a participating agent or agency office, ask whether that location can reprint it. If it cannot, contact the state licensing office and ask what identifying details it needs.
- Confirm the cost and delivery method. Ask whether a fee applies per document or item. A basic paper reprint may be treated differently from a durable hard card or special report card, and a mailed card may not be immediate.
- Verify what you may use while fishing. Ask whether the state accepts a printed copy or official app for the specific license and activity. Do not assume a receipt, screenshot, or ordinary phone photo is valid proof.

These examples illustrate different approaches; they are not a complete state-by-state directory. Check the current instructions for your issuing jurisdiction before relying on a fee or procedure.

Do not treat every fishing document as interchangeable
A basic license, validation, permit, tag, hard card, and harvest-reporting card may each have different replacement rules. Some states allow repeated printing of a license but restrict reprints of a report card or other item used to document catch. Ask about the lost item by its exact name rather than requesting only a “license replacement.”
Likewise, proof that you paid is not automatically a valid substitute for the credential. Confirm whether the state accepts a printed copy, official app, or another format for the specific activity before heading out.

Protect a paper copy after replacement
If your state provides or accepts a paper license, keep it protected from water and damage. Washington WDFW suggests a sturdy zip-top bag or waterproof license holder for paper documents. A holder protects a lawful copy; it does not replace a missing license or make an unaccepted format valid. WDFW printing guidance
