How to Get a Car with No Down Payment: A U.S. Buyer’s Guide

You can get a car with no down payment only if a lender or dealer offers financing that covers the amount due upfront and approves you for it. “Zero down” is not a guaranteed approval or a promise that you will owe nothing when you take delivery: taxes, fees, add-ons, or other costs may still be due, and some advertised deals are leases rather than purchases. The safest approach is to set a total-car budget, get financing preapproval, negotiate the vehicle price separately, and compare the written costs of the complete loan.

What “no down payment” does—and does not—mean

A down payment is money paid toward the vehicle rather than borrowed. With a true zero-down purchase, the lender finances the amount that would otherwise be covered by that payment. That can leave you borrowing more, which may increase the payment and total interest. A down payment can reduce the amount borrowed and may help reduce the interest rate, but lenders set their own approval terms; there is no universal qualifying credit score, down-payment threshold, or approval probability.

Also distinguish a zero-down loan from “nothing due at signing.” A deal may require taxes, registration, dealer fees, or other charges upfront even if it does not require a down payment. A promotion may instead be for a lease, include restrictions, or shift costs into later payments. Get the transaction type and exact cash due at signing in writing.

How to pursue a no-down-payment purchase

  1. Set a budget for the whole car

Work out what you can afford beyond the loan payment, including insurance, fuel, maintenance, taxes, and fees. A less expensive vehicle and fewer optional add-ons can lower both monthly and total costs. Do not let a dealer’s advertised monthly payment set your budget by itself.

  2. Check your credit and get preapproved

Review your credit information before shopping. Ask a bank or credit union for written terms, including the APR, loan term, maximum amount financed, and cash due at signing. Compare that offer with any financing arranged through a dealer. Preapproval gives you a useful comparison and spending limit, but it does not guarantee approval for a particular vehicle or a zero-down arrangement.

  3. Get the out-the-door price before discussing financing

Ask for the vehicle’s complete out-the-door price in writing, including taxes and fees, before negotiating the loan. The FTC advises: “Get an ‘out-the-door’ price of the car in writing before you visit the lot, and before you talk financing with the dealer.” Keeping vehicle price separate from financing makes it easier to compare the car itself and spot added costs.

  4. Ask what the zero-down offer actually covers

Have the dealer or lender specify whether the offer is a purchase or lease, the exact amount due at signing, which taxes and fees are included or financed, the APR and term, eligibility restrictions, and whether payments change later. Ask specifically about any balloon payment. Do not assume the phrase “zero down” means no cash is due at delivery or that every upfront expense will be financed.

  5. Compare complete written offers

Compare offers for the same vehicle price and cash-due assumptions. A low monthly payment may reflect a longer loan, which can cost more overall. Record the APR, amount financed, term and number of payments, payment amount, fees and add-ons, finance charge, total of payments, and total sale price.

  6. Review the contract and add-ons before signing

Check that the final paperwork matches the agreed vehicle price, amount financed, due-at-signing amount, APR, term, and total payments. Ask whether each warranty, GAP product, credit insurance policy, or other add-on is optional and what it costs in total. These products are not generally required to obtain an auto loan; do not accept one simply because it is presented alongside financing.

What to compare across offers

Item What to verify
Vehicle price The written out-the-door price, including taxes and fees.
Cash due at signing The exact amount due before you take the vehicle, not just the stated down payment.
Amount financed Whether taxes, fees, add-ons, or negative equity are included in the loan.
APR and finance charge The borrowing rate and total finance cost for the stated terms.
Term and payments Loan length, number of payments, payment amount, and any payment that changes later.
Total cost Total of payments and total sale price, so a smaller monthly payment does not hide a costlier loan.
Offer conditions Eligibility limits, promotion end date, and whether the offer is a purchase or lease.
Add-ons Each product included, whether it is optional, and its total cost.

Trade-ins, limited credit, and co-signers

Trade-in value and negative equity

If your trade-in is worth more than the balance on its existing loan, its net value can contribute toward the purchase and reduce how much you borrow. If you owe more than the vehicle is worth, the difference is negative equity. Rolling that balance into a replacement loan can increase the amount borrowed, loan length, or monthly payment, so check how it appears in the new contract.

Dealer-arranged and buy-here-pay-here financing

Compare dealer-arranged financing with direct offers from banks or credit unions. Buy-here-pay-here dealers may work with buyers who have limited credit histories, but the CFPB says their rates tend to be higher. Compare total loan costs and check other lenders rather than judging an offer by whether it is available.

Co-signers

A co-signer may be an option when your credit history is weak, but they take on real responsibility for the contract. Late payments can affect them as well as you, so both parties should understand the obligation before signing.

Why a no-down loan may cost more

Financing more of the purchase means a larger amount is subject to interest. The final cost also depends on the APR, loan term, fees, and any products added to the contract. Extending the term can lower the monthly payment while increasing the total paid over the life of the loan. Compare the total of payments—not just the payment due each month—and consider whether a less expensive vehicle or waiting to save some money would make the loan more manageable.

There is no source-backed universal rate or approval rule for zero-down auto loans. Qualification and terms depend on the lender, the vehicle, the loan structure, and the applicant. State fees, laws, lender criteria, and promotions can also differ across the United States.
