There is no single cheapest way to ship to China. The lowest-cost choice depends on where the parcel starts, its packed weight and dimensions, contents, delivery deadline, and who pays import charges. Compare live quotes for the same shipment, then add duties, taxes, brokerage, and other fees to find its total landed cost.
What to compare before choosing a service
Gather the details that carriers use to price and accept an international shipment. Use the parcel’s packed measurements, not estimates based on the item alone.
- Origin and destination postal codes
- Packed weight and dimensions
- Number of parcels and packaging type
- Contents and declared value
- Your latest acceptable delivery date
- Whether duties, taxes, and related charges are prepaid or billed to the recipient
FedEx identifies origin and destination, service, desired delivery time, package type, dimensions and weight, packaging, package count, and insurance as factors that can affect rates. A digital parcel scale can help you establish packed weight before requesting quotes.
Compare quotes on equal terms
- Enter the same origin and destination postal codes, packed weight, dimensions, parcel count, and contents in each carrier’s calculator.
- Compare services that meet your deadline. If delivery is flexible, include slower options rather than comparing express services alone.
- Review the service’s current delivery estimate, customs handling, size and weight limits, and any restrictions on your contents.
- Check who pays import charges and whether the quote includes fees for advancing duties or taxes.
- Compare the resulting total cost, not only the postage figure.
FedEx describes total landed cost as “Shipping rates + Duties + Taxes + Fees = Total landed cost.” Its international rate guidance and International Economy service information can help you assess its services, but use a current quote for your shipment rather than assuming a particular service is always cheapest.

For context, Shippo reports quotes pulled April 29, 2026 for a one-pound parcel from San Francisco to Shanghai. These historical third-party figures illustrate a price-versus-speed tradeoff; they are not guaranteed current rates or a ranking for other routes.
| Service | Reported quote | Estimated transit time in the article |
|---|---|---|
| USPS First Class Package International Service | $29.90 | About 15 days |
| USPS Priority Mail International | $63.09 | About 8 days |
| USPS Priority Mail Express International | $73.52 | About 4 days |
| DHL Express Worldwide | $66.97 | About 5 days |
The same Shippo article reports San Francisco-to-Shanghai quotes for a five-pound parcel of $82.93 for USPS Priority Mail International, with an estimated transit time of about 8 days, and $101.86 for USPS Priority Mail Express International, with an estimated transit time of about 4 days. Shippo says actual prices vary by origin ZIP code, package dimensions, and carrier account. Check its article for context, then request live quotes for your own shipment.

Check destination rules and added charges
Customs duties and taxes
Shipping charges are not necessarily the recipient’s full cost. USPS says personal-use items mailed to China are subject to duty and tax. Its China country page lists service-specific limits and documentation notes; verify the rules for the service you select rather than applying one postal service’s limits to another.
Brokerage and duty-advance fees
Some carriers charge when they advance import charges on the recipient’s behalf. UPS’s China Mainland fee information states that its disbursement fee applies when UPS prepays duties, taxes, or government charges. The page lists a fee of 2.5% of duties and taxes, with a minimum of RMB 42 per shipment, effective September 20, 2026. Because fees can change and depend on shipment terms, confirm the current charge and who is responsible before booking.

Service limits and contents
Postal and express services can have different weight, size, value, documentation, and contents requirements. For example, the USPS China page lists a 70-pound limit in its Global Express Guaranteed section; that limit should not be treated as applying to every USPS service. For commercial shipments or particular goods, confirm admissibility, customs paperwork, and charges for the exact contents and transaction with the selected carrier and relevant destination guidance.

Choose the option with the lowest total cost that meets your delivery deadline and accepts the parcel. A low postage quote may cease to be the least expensive option if import duties, taxes, brokerage, or duty-advance fees are added later. If the recipient may be billed, include that amount in the comparison and make the payment arrangement clear before sending.
