You can deposit cash at an ATM only if the machine accepts cash deposits and supports your account. Find an eligible machine through your bank’s official app or website, then follow its prompts to select the account, insert and verify the bills, and confirm the transaction. Exact steps, limits, fees, and funds-availability timing vary by bank and machine.
Before you go: find an ATM that accepts cash for your account
Use your bank’s ATM locator or official app and check that the selected machine accepts cash deposits for your particular account. A machine may offer deposits but not accept cash, or may not support deposits to every account. If you use an ATM outside your bank’s network, confirm that the machine and your account are eligible and check for any fee.
Count your bills before you approach the ATM. Banks and machines can set different bill-count or deposit limits, so check your bank’s instructions and the limit shown by the machine rather than assuming there is one universal dollar limit.
How to deposit cash at an ATM
- Authenticate. Use the method supported by your bank and the ATM. Many machines ask you to insert or tap a debit or ATM card and enter your PIN.
- Choose the deposit option. Select the cash-deposit option, then choose the account that should receive the money, such as checking or savings.
- Insert the bills as directed. Follow the screen’s instructions for placing cash in the machine. Some ATMs accept bills directly; others may require an envelope. Do not put cash into an envelope unless the ATM instructs you to.
- Review the amount. Check the amount displayed against the cash you intended to deposit. If it is wrong, use the machine’s correction or cancellation options, if available, before confirming.
- Confirm and keep the record. Complete the transaction only when the displayed amount is correct. Take the receipt or other confirmation, retrieve your card if applicable, and check that you have left with your belongings.
- Check your account. Review the deposit in your bank account afterward. Keep the receipt or confirmation if the machine rejects bills, shows an incorrect amount, or the deposit does not appear as expected.
Screen labels, card handling, envelope requirements, acceptance limits, and supported access methods vary. Follow the instructions on the ATM and your bank’s current guidance.

Will you need an envelope?
It depends on the bank and machine. Wells Fargo says its ATMs accept cash and checks without an envelope and display the bill count and total. Chase notes that many current ATMs accept deposits without envelopes, while some older machines may require one. These are provider-specific examples, not a rule for every ATM. Use an envelope only when the ATM or your bank says it is required.
When will ATM cash be available?
Do not assume an ATM cash deposit will be available immediately. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says that cash deposited in person to an employee of a bank or credit union generally must be available by the next business day. That rule is not a universal promise for cash deposited at an ATM.

The CFPB also explains that an institution’s cutoff time for an ATM or other location cannot be earlier than noon. A deposit made after the institution’s cutoff may be treated as received on the next business day. Noon is a regulatory floor for the cutoff—not a guarantee of same-day posting or access. The institution’s policy and the notice at the ATM determine how the deposit is handled. The CFPB says the hold period depends on the date and type of deposit and the bank’s policies; its guidance was last reviewed August 28, 2026. The FDIC’s examination guidance also says ATM users must receive notice that funds deposited at an ATM may not be available for immediate withdrawal.
What to check if you cannot deposit cash at an ATM
If the machine does not offer a cash-deposit option, rejects the bills, or does not support your account, do not leave cash behind or assume the deposit went through. Follow any instructions on screen, take the transaction record, and contact your bank using its official contact information if the issue is unresolved.
