An elevator pitch is a short, prepared introduction that tells someone who you are, what experience or strengths matter to them, and what you hope to do next. Keep it focused on the listener, support your point with a concrete example, and end with a question or invitation. The goal is to open a conversation—not deliver a miniature résumé.
What to include in an elevator pitch
When someone asks, “So, what can you tell me about yourself?”, choose a few details that make sense for that person and setting. Stanford Graduate School of Business frames this as a chance to communicate relevant experience and interests, not to list everything on your résumé (Stanford GSB elevator-pitch guidance).
- Introduce yourself and give context. Share your name and, when useful, your current role, education, or career stage.
- State your direction. Name the type of role, work, field, or conversation you are pursuing.
- Show relevant value with evidence. Choose one or two strengths and connect them to a project, experience, or accomplishment. The NIH Office of Intramural Training & Education advises: “Focus on concrete examples rather than vague statements” (NIH OITE, “Creating an Effective Elevator Pitch”).
- Make it a two-way exchange. Close with a focused question, request for advice, or invitation to continue talking.
This is a flexible checklist, not a script to recite word for word. The right evidence depends on what the listener needs to know.
How to tailor the pitch to the person and setting
Before drafting, decide what you want from the conversation and which example best establishes your relevance. A pitch for a recruiter may foreground a qualification and target role; a conversation with an alum may be more useful if it conveys your interests and leads into thoughtful questions. Stanford Alumni Association recommends sharing relevant experience, skills, interests, or values, then asking questions and following up afterward (Stanford Alumni Association elevator-pitch guidance).

|---|---|---|
| Career fair or employer information session | A qualification or accomplishment connected to the role you are exploring | “What qualities are most useful for someone entering this role?” |
| Informational conversation with an alum | Your interests and the experience that led you to seek their perspective | “Would you be open to sharing how you got started in this area?” |
| Professional introduction or networking event | Your current work, relevant strength, and the kind of connection you hope to make | “What kind of work are you focused on right now?” |
| Interview opening | A concise account of your background that connects to the position | Pause for the interviewer’s next question rather than forcing a networking-style ask. |
These are tailoring options, not required lines. Santa Clara University’s career guidance discusses a less-than-60-second scenario, while the settings and emphasis vary by conversation (Santa Clara University Career Center elevator pitch).

Make the connection between fields explicit: name the skill and show where you used it. The templates are starting points, not quoted examples or guaranteed scripts; replace each bracket with a true, specific detail and adjust the closing question to the conversation.
How long should an elevator pitch be?
There is no single duration across the reviewed career resources. Emmanuel College Career Center describes a typical 30–60 second introduction, Santa Clara University presents a scenario under 60 seconds, and Stanford materials allow up to about 90 seconds in some contexts (Emmanuel College Career Center elevator-pitch guidance; Santa Clara University Career Center; Stanford GSB; Stanford Alumni Association). Treat those as context-specific guidance, not a universal timer: keep a first networking introduction brief and add detail only when the other person invites it.

Write and practice a pitch that sounds like you
- Brainstorm possible material. Consider education, work, internships, projects, volunteering, organizations, and accomplishments.
- Select for relevance. Keep only the details that connect to this listener and your goal.
- Draft in plain language. Use words you would naturally say in conversation rather than résumé phrases.
- Read it silently and aloud. Revise sentences that feel stiff or difficult to say.
- Prepare a supporting example. Be ready to explain the project or experience behind your strongest claim.
Stanford GSB suggests checking: “Is my statement authentic? Does it sound authentic? Does it sound spontaneous?” It also recommends considering whether people who know you would recognize the description and whether examples can bring it to life (Stanford GSB elevator-pitch guidance). Practice enough to feel comfortable, but deliver the pitch as an opening to listen and respond—not as a memorized speech.
