GSTR-6 is the monthly GST return for registered Input Service Distributors (ISDs). To begin, sign in to the GST Portal, open Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard, select the financial year and month, and choose PREPARE ONLINE in the GSTR-6 tile. Check the due date shown for that period before proceeding: the usual deadline is the 13th of the following month, but an extension may change it.
Who files GSTR-6?
GSTR-6 is for registered Input Service Distributors, not a general GST return for every business. It is filed monthly. The GST Portal’s Welcome Kit identifies the return as monthly and lists the ordinary deadline as the 13th of the following month; its publication year is not established in the accessible document result.
Check the due date for your return period
Use the due date displayed on the GST Portal for the selected financial year and month. The 13th is the ordinary deadline, not a guarantee that the date has not been extended for a particular period. The Portal’s GSTR-6 utility guidance says the selected-period page displays the due date: GSTR6 Offline Tool (last updated 03/02/2021).
Open GSTR-6 on the GST Portal
- Sign in to the GST Portal using the taxpayer’s valid credentials.
- Go to Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard.
- Select the financial year and monthly return period, then select Search.
- Check the due date displayed for the selected period.
- In the GSTR-6 tile, select PREPARE ONLINE to start preparing the return on the Portal.
The official utility guidance also describes previewing the return. The detailed GSTR-6 utility instructions were not accessible, so the current table names, allocation rules, upload format, final filing controls, and authentication steps are not established here. Use the current GSTR-6-specific instructions presented by the Portal rather than assuming that the steps for another GST return apply.

What recipients see after an ISD files
Information an ISD files through GSTR-6 is reflected in the recipient’s GSTR-2B according to the Portal’s cut-off process. The Portal describes GSTR-2B as a static, read-only, auto-drafted ITC statement; recipients do not file or edit it. Its GSTR-2B FAQ says ISD details appear in the recipient’s next open GSTR-2B, subject to the applicable cut-off.
