To change the card Amazon selects for future eligible purchases, open Your Payments, go to Settings, and update Default Purchase Preference. You can choose a saved payment method or add one. To remove an obsolete card, select it in Your Payments and choose Remove from wallet. A wallet change does not update an open order or an order already in process.
Change your default card for future purchases
- Sign in to Amazon and open Your Account > Your Payments.
- Open Settings and find Default Purchase Preference.
- Select the card or other payment method you want to use. If it is not saved yet, add it and enter its details.
- Verify the payment information and continue through the on-screen prompts to save the preference.
Amazon’s current help identifies Default Purchase Preference as the setting to update: How to Update Your Amazon Payment Method. Labels or screen layouts can change, so follow the prompts shown in your account.

Remove an old card from your wallet
- In Your Account > Your Payments, select the card you want to remove.
- Choose Remove from wallet, then follow the on-screen instructions to confirm.
To change a card’s details instead of deleting it, select the card and choose Edit. Amazon’s walkthrough is in Manage Payment Methods.
If you already placed an order
Changing a payment method in Your Payments does not change the payment method on an open order or one already in process. Go to Your Orders and use the order-specific options or guidance for a pending order; do not assume the new default will be charged for it. Amazon notes this limitation in its payment-method management help and payment update help.

Amazon Payments is a separate service
Amazon Payments has separate help for payment methods registered with that service. Its instructions to delete a registered payment method or edit a credit card are not the retail Amazon shopping steps above.
The cited retail guidance describes the Default Purchase Preference setting for Amazon shopping; it does not establish that changing it updates every recurring subscription, digital service, or other Amazon service.
