To calculate your average hours worked per week, add the hours you actually worked during the weeks you want to measure, then divide by the number of those weeks. For example, 160 hours across four weeks equals an average of 40 hours per week. The result depends on which weeks and which kind of hours you count, so define both before doing the math.

Calculate your average step by step

  1. Choose the period. For example, use the last four complete weeks. Include each week in that period consistently, including weeks when you worked zero hours if they fall within the period you are measuring.
  2. Total the right hours for each week. If you mean hours actually worked, count work time rather than paid leave or scheduled time you did not work.
  3. Add the weekly totals. If you have more than one job, add the hours from all jobs for each week.
  4. Divide by the number of weeks included. The formula is: average hours worked per week = total hours worked ÷ number of weeks.
  5. Round only the final result. Keep the full value while calculating, then round to a useful precision, such as one decimal place.

Example using four weeks

Suppose your weekly totals are 38, 42, 40 and 40 hours. They add up to 160 hours. Divide 160 by 4 weeks: your average is 40 hours per week.

Decide what counts as hours worked

“Hours worked,” “hours paid” and “usual” or scheduled hours are not interchangeable. For a personal average, state which measure you want. If you want the time you actually worked, generally leave out vacation, sick leave, holidays and other time not worked. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) explains that its establishment-survey estimate of hours worked removes nonwork time such as vacation, sick leave and holidays; that statistical method is not a universal payroll rule. See BLS guidance on estimating total hours worked.

Actual hours

Actual hours are the hours you worked in the period. They can differ from your usual schedule if you took time off, worked extra hours or worked fewer hours than normal. BLS’s Current Population Survey says, “Data on hours at work include only people who were at work for at least one hour during the reference week.” That definition describes the survey measure, not how every personal or employer calculation must treat a week with no work.

Paid hours

Paid hours may include time for which you received pay even though you did not work, depending on the employer’s records and the measure being used. BLS establishment-survey hours are collected on an hours-paid basis; its productivity program adjusts those hours to estimate hours worked, including adjustments for paid time off and off-the-clock work by salaried employees. The distinction is described in the BLS Handbook of Methods: Productivity Measures—Calculation.

Usual or scheduled hours

Usual hours describe your normal schedule, not necessarily what you worked in a particular week. BLS separates usual hours from actual hours in its Current Population Survey definitions. If you want an average of time actually worked, use actual records rather than multiplying your normal schedule by the number of weeks.

Use a consistent week count for the period

The denominator is the number of weeks in the period you chose. Do not assume a calendar month is exactly four weeks: months have different lengths. For an average over a month, use dated records and a clear method—for example, sum hours from a defined date range and divide by the number of weeks represented by that range. If you instead want an average across complete workweeks, define the first and last included weeks and divide by that count.

Keep the same period definition for both the hours and the divisor. Mixing a monthly total with an assumed four-week denominator can make the result misleading.

Include every job if you want your total weekly workload

For a combined average across jobs, add the hours from each job within each included week, then divide the combined total by the number of weeks. For example, if you worked 30 hours at one job and 12 at another in a week, that week’s combined total is 42 hours. Do not calculate separate job averages and average those results unless you specifically want each job weighted equally; that can misrepresent your total hours when the jobs have different periods or schedules.

BLS says its published actual-hours data for people with multiple jobs cover all jobs during the reference week. See BLS Current Population Survey concepts and definitions.

Personal average versus a published workforce statistic

A personal average describes one person’s hours over a chosen period. A workforce statistic may combine hours across many employees and use a particular survey definition. For example, BLS calculates average weekly hours in its Current Employment Statistics program by dividing employee hours by the number of employees; this is an aggregate, not a recommended target for an individual. The calculation is described in the BLS Handbook of Methods: Current Employment Statistics—Calculation.

In its September 2026 seasonally adjusted table, BLS reported 34.4 average weekly hours for total private payrolls. The August and September 2026 estimates were preliminary, and the table notes revisions reflecting March 2025 benchmark levels and updated seasonal-adjustment factors. This dated aggregate is useful as statistical context, not as a substitute for your own records or a personal benchmark. See BLS Table B-2 for September 2026.

Check your calculation before using it

  • Hours and weeks match: You included the same defined period in both the total and the divisor.
  • Absences are treated deliberately: For actual hours worked, nonwork leave is not counted as work time; retain zero-hour weeks if they are inside the period you are averaging.
  • Jobs are handled consistently: Include all jobs for a combined personal workload, or calculate each job separately if that is the question.
  • The result is labeled: Say whether it is an average of actual hours, paid hours or usual scheduled hours, and specify the period.

This calculation explains an average; it does not determine legally compensable time or overtime. Those questions depend on the applicable jurisdiction, worker classification, employer policy and contract terms.
