The clearest early number is Tan’s own statement that he had invested £40.8 million by 2012. His later £100 million figure was a projection, while a 2025 media report put his cumulative investment at more than £200 million without providing an audited calculation. A separate £55 million figure reported in 2026 is debt still due to him—not his total investment.
What is the best-supported figure for Tan’s investment?
In a 2012 personal statement reproduced by Cardiff City Online, Tan said he had invested £40.8 million in the club by that point: £34.8 million in loans and £6 million in equity. This is a dated statement of funding to 2012, not a lifetime total.
The same statement set out a plan that would take his total investment to £100 million. Tan described £35 million in planned cash funding, £22 million in planned capital spending and a further £2.2 million contingency. Those were projected amounts, not evidence that the spending was ultimately completed.
Why do later reports cite more than £200 million?
A Cadena SER report published 3 July 2025 described Tan as having invested more than £200 million. It did not provide an audited calculation, so this should be treated as a media-reported estimate, not a confirmed lifetime total.

Cardiff City’s financial update for the year ended 31 May 2024 offers a more specific, but annual, figure: net additional funding from Tan and connected parties was £11.832 million during that financial year. The update also reported a £9.957 million operating loss and an £11.661 million loss before tax. These figures describe one year’s funding and results; they cannot be added to the 2012 amount as though they establish a complete cumulative total. The club said loans accrued interest at 7%, but Tan waived the interest due to him. See the club’s 2025 financial update.
What does Cardiff City still owe Tan?
In a statement updated 24 June 2026, Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust said that on 31 May 2026 Tan converted £42 million of debt owed to him into shares. The Trust said the club advised it and the media that the remaining debt due to Tan was £55 million. The statement was reproduced by Cardiff City Online.

The £55 million is a remaining debt balance after the conversion; it is not the amount Tan has invested over his ownership. Converting debt into shares changes how the amount is represented on the balance sheet, but does not make the debt figure a lifetime funding total.
What was the reported Gareth Bale takeover approach?
Cadena SER reported on 3 July 2025 that a consortium led by Gareth Bale had made an offer of around £40 million, attributing the reported amount to The Times. It also said Tan did not consider the offer sufficient. The report does not establish that the offer was accepted or that a sale was completed. The £40 million reported offer is a proposed purchase price, not a measure of Tan’s investment in the club.

How to read the different figures
| Figure | What it describes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| £40.8 million | Tan’s stated investment by 2012: £34.8 million in loans and £6 million in equity | First-person historical figure; not a lifetime total. |
| £100 million | Tan’s projected total after planned funding, capital spending and contingency in his 2012 statement | A plan, not a verified final outturn. |
| More than £200 million | Tan’s cumulative investment as described by Cadena SER in July 2025 | Secondary media estimate; no audited calculation was provided. |
| £55 million | Debt still due to Tan after a £42 million conversion into shares in May 2026, according to the Supporters’ Trust | Remaining debt balance, not total investment. |
| Around £40 million | Reported value of the Bale-led consortium’s 2025 offer | Media-reported offer terms, not a completed transaction or investment total. |
Why company filings do not settle the lifetime total
Companies House lists Cardiff City group accounts for the year ended 31 May 2025 as filed on 26 February 2026, and a share allotment dated 28 May 2026 as filed on 24 June 2026. The filing history confirms those documents and dates, but the filing record alone does not state an audited lifetime total invested by Tan.
