The Guardian reported in August 2024 that Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle salary was about £500,000. That is a reported salary estimate, not a confirmed total for his seven-month spell. Argyle also paid compensation when Rooney left, but BBC Sport says the club’s accounts do not disclose the amount. The available figures therefore do not establish his total earnings from the club.
How much did Wayne Rooney earn at Plymouth Argyle?
The Guardian reported Rooney’s Plymouth salary as “about £500,000” in an interview feature published on 10 August 2024. This is a newspaper-reported estimate, not a salary figure confirmed in a published contract or club accounts. The report does not establish that £500,000 was his total pay for the period he worked at the club.
Rooney and Argyle parted by mutual agreement on 31 December 2024, seven months after his appointment. Because the reported salary and any exit compensation are separate categories, the £500,000 estimate cannot be treated as a verified final total. The Guardian’s August 2024 interview is the source of the salary estimate.
How much did Plymouth pay Rooney when he left?
BBC Sport reported that Plymouth paid Rooney compensation when he departed, but the club’s 2024/25 accounts did not stipulate the amount. No exact payment is established in the published reporting. It would be misleading to add an assumed settlement to the Guardian’s salary estimate or to infer one from the club’s overall wage bill. BBC Sport’s report on the accounts gives the disclosure available.

Why the club’s wage bills do not reveal Rooney’s pay
Argyle’s accounts provide financial context, not a breakdown of Rooney’s personal compensation. BBC Sport reported that for the year ended 30 June 2024 the club recorded £25.6 million in revenue and a loss exceeding £2.4 million. Its wage bill almost doubled, from £8.3 million to £15.2 million, as the club returned to the Championship.
For the year ended 30 June 2025, BBC Sport reported a record club-wide wage bill of £18 million, equal to 73.7% of revenue, with revenue of £28.8 million. Those totals cover club payroll, not Rooney alone. They cannot be used to calculate his salary or undisclosed departure compensation. BBC Sport’s accounts coverage reports the 2024/25 figures; its 2023/24 financial report covers the earlier year.

Does Simon Hallett regret appointing Wayne Rooney?
The available reporting does not establish that Plymouth owner Simon Hallett explicitly regretted appointing Rooney. Before Rooney’s first league match, Hallett told The Guardian: “Wayne needs to succeed. If he can’t succeed here then perhaps he should become a TV pundit.” He also said Rooney had earned the job despite his high-profile playing career. Those comments show that Hallett expected him to succeed, but they are not a later admission of regret. The Guardian interview records what Hallett said before the season’s outcome was known.
Hallett set the club’s ambitions against its budget, saying: “Success for Plymouth is overperforming the budget, so if we can finish 16th or above I’d be delighted.” In June 2024, he had said Rooney would have an increased playing budget, though it would still be among the Championship’s lowest. Argyle’s announcement covered the appointment and budget context.

After the season, Hallett described 2024/25 as disappointing and said the club had failed to “outsmart” its opponents. That is criticism of the club’s performance and strategy, but BBC Sport’s account report does not quote him saying he regretted hiring Rooney. BBC Sport’s coverage of the accounts reports Hallett’s retrospective comments.
