Bristol City was reported to be due about £10.5 million under a sell-on clause, based on Bournemouth’s profit from the sale—not 20% of the full transfer fee.
How the reported £10.5 million estimate is calculated
Reports said Bristol City retained a clause entitling it to 20% of Bournemouth’s profit when Semenyo was sold. Bournemouth had paid about £10 million to sign him from Bristol City. Manchester City’s initial reported fee was £62.5 million.
Using those rounded figures, the illustrative calculation is: (£62.5 million − about £10 million) × 20% = about £10.5 million. The Guardian reported Bristol City’s share at about that amount. This is an estimate based on press-reported figures, not an audited calculation or confirmed final payment. The Guardian’s transfer report and BBC Sport reported Bournemouth’s original purchase price; Sky Sports reported the initial fee and add-ons.
What is—and is not—confirmed about Bristol City’s share
- The reported clause: Bristol City’s share was described as 20% of Bournemouth’s profit, rather than 20% of the resale fee. The Guardian and Sky Sports reported the clause.
- The add-ons: Reports described up to £1.5 million in performance-related add-ons on top of the £62.5 million initial fee. The available reporting does not establish whether any add-ons were triggered or how they would affect the clause calculation. Sky Sports
- The payment: The sources do not establish the clause’s detailed accounting terms, exact payment timing, or the amount Bristol City ultimately received. The reported £10.5 million should therefore be treated as an approximate entitlement, not a confirmed cash receipt. The Guardian
Why Liverpool and Manchester United are in the question
Liverpool and Manchester United were reported among the clubs interested in Semenyo, but neither completed the transfer. Manchester City signed him from Bournemouth on 9 January 2026. Liverpool FC’s media-watch coverage reflected the earlier interest and sell-on reporting; the completed move and fee were reported by Sky Sports.
